Our state government is considering legislation that would over-rule any existing city or local ordinances that prohibit keeping fowl on private property in more urban areas. The author of the bill says we need to be able to get back to our agrarian roots and be able to raise our own healthy meat and eggs. {#emotions_dlg.huh}

I have to wonder why they should stop with chickens and turkeys?? Why not let folks raise their own beef, pork and lamb in their backyards?? {#emotions_dlg.ohmy} {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

For the record, I'm NOT in favor of such laws! I grew up on a farm and that's where chickens, turkeys and other "farm" animals belong...not in my neighbor's backyard, making noise and smelling bad!

We have lots of wild turkeys where I live. It's really weird to see one on the porch in the morning or roosting in trees in our yard. It drives our dog nuts !

Chickens are allowed in city limits where I live. It's not a problem at all.

Lots of cities allow chickens. It's the roosters that are noisy, and you have to watch make sure they aren't raised for cockfighting.

Chickens destroy your yard, though. You'll end up with bare dirt.

We had chickens in the city when I was growing up. and had a vegetable garden, too. We would exchange vegetables with a neighbor who also had a garden. (ca. 1940's)

Everyone probably had them at that time.

Wanted to thank everyone for your posts. I think on one hand I'd be okay with folks having a couple QUIET chickens in their backyards...NO roosters! {#emotions_dlg.devil2}

When I was a kid growing up on our farm, it was my dad's job to whack the chickens. After chopping their heads off, he'd hang them by their feet on the clothesline to let them bleed out. Then my sis & I got to pluck them - YUCK. My mom dressed them and cooked them and we all ate them. I'm so glad I can buy ready-to-cook chicken at the market! {#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

But on the other hand, I think what got me the most about this proposed legislation is that if it passes, it will trump any existing local or city ordinances that control chickens and other fowl within the city limits. I don't see why the state should be able to tell cities that they can't set limits when it comes to having "livestock" in urban backyards!

I like chickens and I understand that people want really fresh eggs. But on the other hand, chicken coops are rat magnets.
