I am the OP. I called my card issuer just to see what they recommended (my financial institution was closed). They said to call my bank and see if they could request a retrieval of the receipt. So I will do that tomorrow. My bank (credit union) can sometimes be a little hokey about these things, but I will push. I also plan on calling the grocery store to see what their records may reflect.

Lesson learned for sure. All future receipts are going to be placed in an envelope from now on. Funny today, DH used the card and handed me the receipt when he came home.

Was it Giant Eagle by chance? If you have the Advantage Card you can look online at your purchases and total.

Unfortunately not GE, but Community Market. They are local to our area, only 4 stores.

Many places can look up purchases by debit or credit cards. I know I have done this at Target and other stores if I lose my receipt or forget to bring it with me. I have never tried it at a grocery store though. Do you do internet banking? You should be able to go online and look at your purchases. It probably won't give you an itemized bill but just give you the totals from the visit to the store.

I do have internet banking. That is how I discovered the amount of the transaction. If i can't get anywhere with my credit union, I will take a copy of that transaction to the grocery store. We will be down that way tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

I would question DH first, not the grocery store. Not trying to be brutal, but sounds like DH perhaps got $50 cash back and was hoping your wouldn't notice, since it is less obvious than an ATM deduction from your bank account. The fact your DH didn't have the receipt sounds "fishy" to me, he picked up more than fish. If it had been some error by the store, they would compensate you. Also, you can go back to that store and they can pull up the record of that purchase, if you have a shopping card there, or just by your phone number if it would be easy to find. They could reprint the shopping receipt for you, probably even with just your phone number and ID and a date of when this mystery $ shopping event happened. I don't wish to be the messenger of gloom, but I also think you should not be naive, and you need to consider that the store didn't make the error. For your sake, I hope they did, but there are ways for you to find out.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

The grocery store has the receipts. If you ask the manager, give him the approx time, the exact date and the cash register they can look it up. If a cash back was hit, they can tell you if the cash was actually given back.

I was in a hurry at the self check a year ago. I did use debit because I needed a 100 cash right away. Later that day I went to give the money to grand kid, no money! I looked everywhere, and had a faint recollection of not putting the money in my wallet. I didn't think I got it. As a last resort I called store. They asked what time, and what cash register I had gone to. I had left it in the bin at the self check cash register! When I went in. they had me sign papers. It had the time, date and transaction number on it. Every receipt has a transaction number, and it goes to the bank. They also balance the recepts every 4 hours, so they know if the balance was over the starting amount. That is what I was told. Come to think of it the bank has a transaction number too.

Jules, thanks for your input, but this is definitely not an issue with DH. I did ask him and he is as perplexed as I. As far as the missing receipt, it probably was placed in the bag and I tossed it.

We had just returned home on a Thursday night from an extended vacation and needed to replenish things like milk, bread and some lunch meat. It being Friday, he stopped at their hot food section and got fish for dinner. He had cash left over from vacation and had no need to take a cash withdrawal.

Unfortunately, this store does not participate in shopping cards, so my only recourse would be to take the transaction number with date to the grocery store and have them try and retrieve the receipt. Since all items are scanned in, I find it difficult to wrap my head around how the cashier could make a keying error, but who knows.

There have been issues with ATMs at stores that they need you to scan your card twice. I am always leary of that and ask the cashier if I am going to get charged twice. That may be the case here. The transaction could have gone through twice and may-be didn't even reflect on the machine that it doubled.

It is baffling to me and I would love to solve this mystery even if I don't see any return of funds.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

Do you think the fish cost more than you thought it would. I was at giant eagle recently and they were sampling salmon and it was really good but it was on sale for 12.00 a pound. Weighed at checkout produce items can end up costing more than you think too.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

I think it's very likely the cashier pocketed the $50.

I don't because if you read the post she is only estimating that the grocery order is 50.00 over what she thought it would be and things add up fasten than you think.

Re: Check your debit card receipts

Ouch ! I have a habit of checking my receipts either when I put the groceries in my car or when I get home. One store we have here will sometimes charge twice for an item (and, no, I do not think it's purposeful).

Re: Check your debit card receipts

Hi all. lovescates, cost of the prepared fish was a little over $10. We buy it weekly during lent. I called my credit union this morning in an attempt to get a receipt retrieval per the recommendation of MasterCard. They said I had to start with the store. I thought my bank statement had the transaction # and it does not.

We have to go grocery shopping today and I want to stop in this store. My husband is saying to just forget it, he feels bad enough it happened to him, but I just want to try and get an explanation regardless if I get any money back.

I have one other option and that is go thru all my empty grocery bags. Thinking about it that may be my best option now.

I'll update if I ever find out what happened.
