Charles Spencer is supposedly worth $149 million but that isn't a lot for the upkeep of that place over the years.

Many people in the UK are hurting for upkeep of their mansions, and that included the couple who own Highclere where Downton Abbey was filmed.

I recall reading that Charles Spencer married a Canadian philanthropist not that long ago ... she's loaded, so the upkeep shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps they are doing it not only for charity, but for the publicity.

The only reason Highclere Castle is doing all right is because of the money they got for shooting Downton Abbey there. It put a new roof on, for one thing. The great estates like Highclere and Althorpe cost millions of POUNDS, not dollars, to run every year.
