Except for a red kettle or toys for tots, I give in private to charities I support. The check out ambush isn't very appealing, just like the "would you like to put this on your acct.?" No thank you, I'm paying cash. "Do you have an acct. with us?" No, I'm paying cash. "If you open an acct. right now you can get a 10% discount..." No, Please let me pay in cash. "Sure, but if you opened an account today..." Do I have to harm you some how to pay with cash?

Yes JCPenney, I'm talking to you!{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

I give to St Jude but they really ticked me off one year. I gave via payroll at work..and then my Aunt is a Breast Cancer Survivor and her Cancer Center had her collecting for certain places. St. Judes was one of them. I should of gave cash..I wrote her a check payable to them..with my info on it..never thought twice..!

A few months later I received a NASTY letter from them saying it has been awhile since they received any checks from me..and they certainly hope no child in my family ever comes down with Cancer. I was shocked by the tone..and obviously they didn't cross reference as they would of known that I gave WEEKLY to them!!

I received the holiday labels and note pad about two weeks ago..and sent them a nice check! Just yesterday I received about 15 labels and a request to auto deduct the check amount MONTHLY..to save us time!! That took nerve! The check was for $100 and they wanted me to give them that MONTHLY on auto deduct!!

I had to laugh at the escalation in requests you received. It is not funny I know. It is maddening actually. I have had this same thing happen with political donations. Never, ever again. I gave a large donation during an election, a few days later they called to thank me, and then asked if I could give more. Then the calls began. I was getting calls for more money at least 2x weekly. .I said, I did donate, that is it. Then they would say, "Oh yes, we see that, but this is for a senator, this is for an amendment...! It was like that children's book, Give A Mouse a Cookie. You know, first you give him a cookie, then he asks for milk to wash it down, then he needs a straw, then he needs a mirror so he doesn't et milk mustache, then he asks to come in rest, then he needs a bigger pillow, better blanket, and and and. Then he never leaves, hahahah!! LOL!

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

I like that the opportunity is there, but I get tired of being asked everywhere I go, and having to "declare" in front of people whether I'm giving or not.

It is never significant, usually a dollar or your left over change, but I feel it is inappropriate to come out and verbally be asked everywhere you now check out.

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

A couple of years ago I was shopping at a Coldwater Creek at Christmas time. My daughter liked their clothes and had picked out several things. I was shopping during one of their additional 25% off everything sales so I had ""saved"" quite a bit. At check out the cashier asked me if I wanted to donate to St. Jude's. I said No and she actually said to me ""What! You saved all this money today and you won't donate?"". My jaw just about hit the floor. I could not believe she said that to me. I was beyond furious. When I got home I sent a E Mail to their customer service dept. detailing the entire conversation. A few weeks later I did get a nice apology letter and a $20.00 gift card.

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

The political begging fills my email and I've started sending it to spam. Some makes it seem that I owe them a contribution. I'm disgusted with both parties so neither are getting a dime from me. I'm wondering, do cashiers ask those paying with food stamps to make a donation?

I always say, "Not today, but thanks for the opportunity, (cashier's name)". I always get a warm smile back.

I don't even say "No, thank you". I just say "No", and I don't feel one bit guilty about it.

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

oh my gawd. I hate suggestive selling whether it be for a charity or not. One year, back in 1995 I was working the drive thru at Arbys. In addition to taking their order we also had to suggestive sell their 'giant size' the fries and drink, suggestive sell their special holiday glasses and then suggestive sell to a charity. I hated it. one customer actually joked asking if I was done asking him questions and I can't say as I blamed him. LOL. just so ya know it isn't entirely fun to have to ask those questions ;-)
