Oh, I agree. The first time I was ever asked at a dollar store if I wanted to donate $1 for a child's toy, I thought they were collecting the money. I was shocked when she reached into a box and pulled out some junk toy sold at the store!

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

I got asked by a cashier to donate to St Jude, I told her I'd rather donate to our local animal shelter that is always in desperate need for money not to a nationwide campaign that will, already has, collect millions. At least Petco does collect for the local animal shelter.

I have nothing against St Jude but there are other charities that haven't the high profile mega fund raisers that are just as deserving.

And they were probably all the toys that weren't selling.

Yeah, original Star Wars.

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

I would never waste the effort to get annoyed over a solicitation to do something good.

I just say ""no - not this time"" if I don't want to contribute.

Simple...

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

A few years ago, I was at the checkout at Walmart. The cashier asked if I wanted to donate to some charity. I said: "Why don't u contact the Walton family, they have lots of money." Most of the time, the money never reaches the people it's supposed to help - and how many hands does it go thru - plus, it's very annoying!

I work at a major retail store. we do the "round up" method. when your purchase comes to $14.99 we will ask you to round up a penny. always for national well known charities.

you would be surprised at how many say no to under a nickel, because they "already gave" somewhere. Were talking about 2cents sometimes here.

it always irritates me when someone won't round up 2 or 3 cents. it does add up.

Your attitude irritates me. I never give to those round up things. I donate to charities I want. I'm not going to be intimidated by a cashier who has an attitude.

I agree with you, BonnieBelle. It's my money and I'll give when and where I choose. I really don't appreciate a sales clerk or anyone else suggesting what I do with my money. Like kittyloo said, it does all add up. The only places I make a point of donating to are my local humane society and a few other places that help animals.

I give to St Jude but they really ticked me off one year. I gave via payroll at work..and then my Aunt is a Breast Cancer Survivor and her Cancer Center had her collecting for certain places. St. Judes was one of them. I should of gave cash..I wrote her a check payable to them..with my info on it..never thought twice..!

A few months later I received a NASTY letter from them saying it has been awhile since they received any checks from me..and they certainly hope no child in my family ever comes down with Cancer. I was shocked by the tone..and obviously they didn't cross reference as they would of known that I gave WEEKLY to them!!

I received the holiday labels and note pad about two weeks ago..and sent them a nice check! Just yesterday I received about 15 labels and a request to auto deduct the check amount MONTHLY..to save us time!! That took nerve! The check was for $100 and they wanted me to give them that MONTHLY on auto deduct!!

I had to laugh at the escalation in requests you received. It is not funny I know. It is maddening actually. I have had this same thing happen with political donations. Never, ever again. I gave a large donation during an election, a few days later they called to thank me, and then asked if I could give more. Then the calls began. I was getting calls for more money at least 2x weekly. .I said, I did donate, that is it. Then they would say, "Oh yes, we see that, but this is for a senator, this is for an amendment...! It was like that children's book, Give A Mouse a Cookie. You know, first you give him a cookie, then he asks for milk to wash it down, then he needs a straw, then he needs a mirror so he doesn't et milk mustache, then he asks to come in rest, then he needs a bigger pillow, better blanket, and and and. Then he never leaves, hahahah!! LOL!

They are persistent little devils..now they call about four times a week....I looked up the 901 numbers that were on my Caller ID and they were St. Jude.

yesterday they dropped all pretense of sending me labels..and sent me FOUR autodeduct slips to complete and send back to bill monthly to my bank/credit card the dollar amount in my original donation.

I just could not believe them..

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

Personally, I never give at the register.

Walking around, I have some singles in an easy outside pocket, and almost always give money to a woman begging .... it just breaks my heart. {#emotions_dlg.crying}

As for men, I base it on the immediate vibe from the person.

I probably give away $8-10 a month .... "there, but for the grace of God, go I".

I think it would be better to have a large display asking for a contribution.

It would be nice, but they know people are more apt to give when put on the spot...especially when other customers are in range of hearing their choice of whether to donate or not. Many people are concerned about what the cashier or other customers will think about them if they say no.

Sorry, but I find that hard to believe ... that people care what the cashier thinks ... who would care? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Re: Charities at the the checkout register

IMO, too bad if it bothers anyone.

Many, if not most, people are very generous during the holidays and are happy to help out. St. Jude's is one that is on some counters and they do such good work.

IMO anyone who complains about a donation notice or a reminder is a Grinch. No one is forcing you to give a red cent, get over being crabby and think of those who need help.
