Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

Good for you. I had that very goal about 5 years before retiring. Paid them all off. There's nothing like being debt free. Very liberating.

Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

Only debt is mortgage and car note. No cc debt in several years. 2008 was too scary for me.

Aim is to pay off mortgage so I can retire with a solid roof over my head.

Haven't had an EP to think about in over a yr.

Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

Our only debt currently is our mortgage. We plan to have it paid off within 5 years. I can't wait!!

Of course, we will have 2 kids in college in 4 years, so I'm not sure we'll be debt free at that point, but we do have all the tuition $$ saved for in-state schools, so all we'll be paying is room & board, books and incidentals (which is no small potatoes, for sure!) And we may need another car for the kids...not sure.

Still, I feel pretty good about where we are today financially, and I'm glad we made the sacrifices through the years to not be over our heads in debt. We are definitely not rich--just never lived beyond our means.

Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

We have all credit cards paid off, car loan in 2 1/2 yrs (trying for much sooner) and a home equity (paying every extra cent on it). I love having it all on line so I can see it everyday).

Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

You guys inspire me. Our financial freedom goal is 5 years. I trust we'll make it as we talk weekly about finances and we're making progress. Congrats to all of you who are there -- or very close -- or even those who are determined to meet this future goal.

Re: Challenge to be Debt Free !

Very sensible goals. Only have the mortgage and we are trying to pay if off early. It's the huge deductible's on our health insurance that scare me. Three years ago, the single plan only had a $300 deductible. It has tripled and people tell me it is still a good deal compared to what they are paying.
