Cat(s) Going Potty on Mat

Hi all,

Was hoping you could help me with a cat issue. I've had my two boys for about a 1.5 years now after fostering them and then adopting them. I've never been a cat person s this has been many a first for me including one of my cats getting a UTI several months back.

They are very good about using the litter box but I've noticed a few times that one or both of them will pee on the mat the litter boxes are placed on. Any idea why they might be doing this? I clean their litter box every day so I'm not sure why this is happening. Could it be a teritorial thing?
