Cat food recommendations?

Hi!

One of my cats recently had crystals in his urine. He went on prescribed food and it cleared up in about a week. I'm supposed to feed him the prescription food from now on, but I was wondering if there are any alternatives. If he HAS to eat the food from the vet I will of course keep him on it. If there is another way to keep this from happening again that may be less expensive and healthy I'd like to know. :-)
