Re: Cash or Charge in Restaurants

We use CC always when dining out. We get cash back on the CC. We carry very little cash on our person. Apple Pay is so convenient. You just touch and go. The establishment does not see your cc number but a code that is linked to our cc number. Just an added layer of security.

I just paid by check at my salon yesterday.  First time.  They got rid of the credit card thing.  So for now on its check or cash.  I don't mind doing it, but I thought I was passed doing checks!  Didn't see a discount though.....We use CC for everything now.

I'm noticing it everywhere ,  recently at the veterinary clinic.  We almost always pay cash at restaurants .

I do not like to use cc or debit cards at restaurants because the "card" disappear from your hands when you hand it over to the waiter or waitress......who then goes to the cash register section.....you're sitting at your table waiting for like maybe 10-15 minutes (depending if crowded/very busy)....long enough for fraud to happen before your card is returned to you.

@Mz iMac  good point !

Re: Cash or Charge in Restaurants

I know a handful of family owned restaurants that only accept/give a discount for cash.

Arr they reporting their income? Who knows?

Cash most of the time for restaurants. At the more expensive places, we use a credit card for the perks.

Yes I have noticed this in "hair salon's".

And in day's past we would ask to put on a 20% tip for the stylist, nail person, whatever.

Now they say no, you have to use an ATM.  I said huh?  I don't have cash.

I then said well I'll have to catch you next time to give the tip.

Yep, a good idea.  Let's going back to writing good old check's.

Unreal - the percentage these cc card's is off the chart's but it is what it is....

@Pink123  So how did you pay for the service if you didn't pay a tip?

I'm confused 🤔

@Cakers3  now carry about 500 at all  times, no problem, in small bill's. What else whould one do in these new times. lol. A no brainer.

Wish the US did card transactions at restaurants like many (most?) Canadian restaurants where they bring the handheld machine to the table to process it and close out the tab.

From a hospitality household here...pay attention to where you might be seeing those extra charges. Are they independent chef-owner type restaurants or corporate conglomerates? The latter is probably making sure that you are covering their interchange fee. This is the cost the company incurs for that financial transaction between them and the credit card company. You may have heard that some places that don't accept AmEx, for example, & that's b/c AmEx charges a higher interchange fee than the other credit cards in the marketplace. If that higher cost isn't passed on to the customer, the restaurant/company just may not want to pay that higher interchange fee just to accept that card. Not saying it's right or wrong -- just why this fee may be in play and why some cards may not be accepted.

Other fees to look out for: automatic tips on smaller table sizes. Used to be 18% for tables of 10+ or such. We're seeing corporate-owned restaurants bring that all the way down to 6+ guests for that automatic tip.

In general, cash is always better for the restaurant staff. They get their money right away. Remember, that most front of house staff make just a couple of dollars an hour and rely on tips to really make their living. [Whether that is the way it should be done or not is a debate for another time.] If guests pay cash, they go home that night with their wages (after tip out). If you charge it, they will get it in their paycheck some weeks later.

Oh, and if you do pay by card, please make sure to leave a signed copy of your receipt in the little folio they bring to the table. If you take all of the paperwork, the restaurant will either have to call you to rectify that for the restaurant/staff -- or the restaurant may have a rule where that's just a loss for the server (which stinks -- working for hours to realize $0 on that effort...far worse is the 10 cent or $1 tippers b/c that takes intention).

Cash payment is an interesting push lately. It is also much easier for people with bad intentions to skim some off the top. Lots to consider for sure, and everyone's comfort level varies.

ETA: The restaurant industry (and perhaps others) just seems to have taken up the long-standing practice of the gas industry, no? In my childhood, there was always a different in price at the gas station between cash and credit. And that exists today. Interesting...

I go to  a restaurant that I order take out.  I noticed this week that they are now charging 3.5 percent for cards used.  I purchase my food with cash now.  Actually I prefer to use cash.I have also noticed when shopping at walmart only certain self check out registers will take cash or cards most will take cards only.  It is crazy

@sunshine 919

I had this happened to me recently in two different stores. One was a Target and the other one was at a Aldi's grocery store. All of the self check out registers were card only, and each store had only one register that accepted cash. I hate to use my card on small purchases which is why I wanted to use cash.

I always carry cash.

I doubt they're reporting 100%.

So true, cash will always be king.
