Cash bar at wedding reception?

this is being done at our youngest son's wedding nexy month....this wasn't printed on the invitations so guests won't know until they arrive at the reception that drinks,including soda and coffee, are their responsibility...we are thinking of buying our guests (family & friends ) one beverage per person...we want to do this as many guests are coming from out of town and out of state also...what have you experienced at weddings you've been to?..thanks
