It really depends on where you live. In my area, $50.00 is pretty normal for one person and $100.00 for 2 people.
Hey Ms Diva, you cannot even imagine what was given in 1971.
$5.00?

totally agree....I would never give such a cheap gift...
And I would never be so rude as to tell someone their gift was cheap.

I no longer give money as a gift.
The last time I did it was a card with a hundred and eighty dollars. I never received a thank you. A year later my cousin asked why I attended the function and never gave a gift. Some one had helped themselves to the gift and my cousin never knew there was cash.
I think something nice from Williams and Sonoma or Gumps or another nice store in your area. Have it sent to the brides home. If they hate it they can return it.

This whole "you must cover the cost of your meal" is totally stupid and presumptuous IMO. It's not my problem if you choose to have a fancy expensive wedding. That's on you, not me. We've already spent money on our clothes, gas, maybe hotel accommodations, etc. I will give a gift I feel is appropriate.
And what if the reception is just cake and punch, or hamburgers and hot dogs? Do you only give a gift equal to maybe $10.00?
I am SO glad I don't run in the type of circles that go by this silly "rules".

....
I guess this puts the kibosh on giving a gift (which might not amount to equal or more than the mystery price of one's dinner) other than cash.
What nonsense.

Do people ever purchase from the registry ?
i do sometimes , especially if i can find it online and have it sent directly to wherever the bride wants the gifts sent. i have also given money directly to certain items on their honeymoon list when it is registered online.

I try to always purchase from the registry. If the bride has gone to the trouble to compile one, I know that they want what is on it. Also, if it for an out of town wedding, make sure to have it shipped directly to them. I have never encountered a registry that had honeymoon list, sounds interesting to me. Are they asking for cash????? BTW has anyone seen Jill Duggar's registry at Walmart? It is a very down to earth registry and I think that is pretty cool. Obviously she values how she has been brought up whether anyone agrees with it. They seem like a loving family.

for example, if they are on a cruise, you can buy them a dinner in town when docked, a tour that they may want to take, drinks on board, events, etc....
