I don't want to write a book but if you can go anywhere else do it.  We moved all the stuff from closets and the other stuff like tv, lamps, night stands etc. from our two bedrooms.  They came, ripped out carpet and padding, replaced padding and then said the carpet was defective.   So I have been living on padding and tac strips until they could reorder.  Then we move all the stuff out of the room again and they come and roll out carpet and tell me it was defective again........I started scrutinizing the folder with the info they give you and even though they said it was free installation, I was charged for over 500.00 for labor charges.  I know I am stupid not to have noticed that. I just got a total bill and paid it.  There is only one other company that I have had this kind of trouble with in my 66 years.  I have written a letter and called the manager twice and he won't return my call.

Re: Carpet at Lowes....OMG....

I would never get carpeting from any of the big box stores. They don't have professionals just kids working their way through high school/college installing it. Good luck tho. Its gotta be quite frustrating.

That's not true in my area. They contract out to contractors who are carpet layers. Where I live, the big box stores do not do any type of installations themselves.

@chiclet, can you email corporate? We had trouble with Lowe's, nothing that serious. My husband emailed someone in corporate, and they got right on it.

That is my suggestion. You shouldn't have had to pay that 500.00 if it says free installation.

Re: Carpet at Lowes....OMG....

If its $500 for labor, it's not "free installation".

That and the distress of two times the frustration and delay with defective carpeting, I would cancel that payment.

Call Lowes corporate.

Those carpet installers sound like they are scamming you. No way should the installation cost $500, labor or otherwise!

Re: Carpet at Lowes....OMG....

I"ve had to re-carpet and re-hardware and re-linoleum floors more times than I care to admit. What I have found over the years is to simply find a flooring company that does a great job and stick with them; EVERYONE runs a sale and that's when you buy. I also found that if you stick with one salesperson, you get even better deals.

My first time getting flooring I went with Home Depot; no issue with the installers. The PRODUCT was faulty. They were a nightmare to deal with and never again. It was a good friend selling for Pulte Homes who told me about the company they had contracted with and how great they were; they also sold to the public. THat was 25 years ago and they have done a perfect job for me and everyone I've recommended them to.

One thing I also learned from my buddy: Pay for the upgraded PADDING but go with mid-line carpet. The padding is the important thing; I've since heard that from many others who work with flooring as well. They are right!

@chiclet Hang in there; it stinks, I know. Good luck!!

I would never have a big box store do any type of work. They contract out, you don't know who you are getting. Plus, they have to add on $$$ for themselves.

Re: Carpet at Lowes....OMG....

Ten years ago, while my husband and I were contemplating retirement, we also considered selling our home. To freshen things up, we bought new carpeting at Lowe's. What a HUGE mistake. It was allegedly their second best and Scotchguarded. It was the worst carpet I had ever purchased. It wore out and stretched out and could not be cleaned properly. I have already replaced all of it. This time I dealt with a locally-owned flooring store. The carpet is soft, pretty, and easy to clean. I will never again buy carpet from a big box store.

Re: Carpet at Lowes....OMG....

I would throw my money out of a moving car before I bought flooring from Lowes or Home Depot.

PLEASE call the store manager today and tell him/her that you expect compensation for the inconvience and the $500 labor charge removed NOW or that you will be contacting the corporate office.
