@corita If she had decided to retire she would have been allowed to announce it.

Layoffs are almost always a surprise to the person being let go and done in such a way that they don't get a chance to say anything publicly. Happens all the time.

I also think that with all the comments on their social media pages bemoaning their leaving, if it had been their choice, they would have addressed those comments and said so.

@geezerette    There was probably an agreement not to mention details.  The announcement was on the official QVC page.  HR may have even written the announcements.

@Kachina624

Could be.  Dan also mentioned it on his personal social media.

But even if they were offered incentives to leave and decided to take them, the wording of the announcements leads one to believe that the idea of leaving QVC was not theirs.  Especially if it's true that Carolyn was talking about upcoming products that she supposedly had a hand in developing.

Pennsylvania is not a right to work state which does not mean what you think it means.  Pennsylvania is an at will state which means you can be let go for any reason that isn't discriminatory.

@sunshine45 , wait, Dan, too!? Woman Surprised  I am clearly behind in my QVC news.  I was just watching Dan & Pat the other day.  They are always so good together.  Sure, Dan can do his standup comedy routine, but that's Dan.  He is likeable because he is calm in his presentations and not over the top.

I edited to add this:  I did a search and found a thread about Dan not leaving.  I am happy to see that because I know how glad he is to be working after his heart attack a few years ago.  This is in Dan's words

dan hughes is NOT leaving qvc..... i guess there are rumors and evidently a reporter had said that he was retiring.

via facebook.....

Just for the record...there have been rumors posted of my pending retirment and they are NOT true. If and when that time comes I will most certainly be posting that information myself and not letting a reporter I have never met, was never interviewed by or never spoke to, be the one to tell you. I am a rather private person by my nature and I don't do many interviews. First of all, my life is rarely news worthy and second...they get thier "facts wrong". The "reason for my soon to be departure" was sighted as "his declining health" and "life threatening condition." WELL THAT'S NEWS TO ME!

I promise I am doing just fine. I was out of work for two days last week with a painful back injury but I am on the mend and doing well. Sunday was the third anniversary of my heart attack and although those days were worriisome for both myself and my family...those days are behind me and I am stronger than ever.

So, I'm sorry if I ruined some one's half baked article but I'm not going anywhere. I love my job, the people I interact with and the purpose of my chosen profession...to help people to realize little slice of the American Dream. So now because of this I have no choice but to go out an buy a large bird. I have the perfect article to line the bottom of his new cage with......

I'm staying right were I am and until I tell you differently ....enjoy the show.

@GloriBee @sunshine45  Isn't this from 2016?

@Mindy D ...oh, sorry!  Good catch!  I had not noticed the date until you pointed it out.  This now makes me very sad.  I guess it is true about Dan?

Everyone, I could delete the above, but then the comments would not make sense.  Please disregard what I had pasted above.

YES. Jayne Brown is delightful. And she does seem to have a connection with Gary, as well.

I looked at the program guide. Pat James Dementri is listed as host for Carolyn's regular  Sunday AM Denim & Co from 7 to 8 AM this week, and Julia Cereley gets the two hour Tuesday spot next week? I'm not too sure about that move. No one is listed on the upcoming Outdoor Patio show.

QVC hasn't scrubbed Dan or Carolyn of their host page, yet. Maybe they also laid off the social media person in charge of the website. (que extreme sarcasm)

I wonder if these forums will be on the chopping block again? If this was mentioned already, I apologize. I haven't looked thru all these many pages.

@GloriBee  That post you quoted from Dan is from 2016.

Dan is indeed gone from QVC.  He posted on his private Facebook page.

@Caaareful Shopper , yes.  I just saw it on his FB page after it was pointed out that what I had shared was from 2016.  I had not noticed that.

I am very sad for Dan.  He was so happy to return to QVC after his heart attack.

This announcement is too sudden and unexpected.  Had she chosen to leave, she would have announced it beforehand.

Carolyn let go over other hosts?  They have to be kidding!

It almost appears QVC management wants to fail.

She turned 64 last September and I believe the oldest... a company looking for an excuse to let seniors go when the opportunity arises? Very common.

On that last birthday she said she hoped to stay around (QVC) for a long time.

Edit:

She said at the end of her Denim & Co Tuesday, yesterday, program with Gary telling us when she would be on next that week.  I know she said Sunday (March 5) with Denim & Co and I think another Garden program this week.  No way, did she expect to leave QVC.

@Foxxee    Did you read all the posts?  I think employees were offered retirement incentives and Carolyn chose to take it.

You're moxey enough to know they can't just lay off older hosts.  It would violate civil rights law and leave them susceptible to lawsuits, but they can offer those eligible, retirement along with a nice incentive.

Ever since Carolyn announced they'd bought a large motorhome, I'd wondered if she had retirement in mind.  Those toys are expensive so most people use them a lot, which requires retirement.

@Kachina624

Companies lay off older employees all the time using other reasons for letting them go.  They cost too much.  This is too fishy for me.  Both over 60 and most experienced.  No way are they going to do anything that would implicate them with illegal age discrimination.

Yes, QVC did say all those let go will receive a  severance package, eligible for Cobra and other benefits.  It is possible, Carolyn and Dan liked what was offered and took it, but it appears to me they were chosen. What would have happened if they said "no." Were other hosts asked if they wanted to leave and two chosen that wanted the severance or just Carolyn and Dan?

As far as did Carolyn have retirement in mind. She only had 2 years until full Social Security.  Why not wait to get full benefits.  On her birthday, she said she wanted to hang around a long time.  That was last September.  A lot can change in 5 1/2 months, though like being chosen to leave.

We will never know.  None of the hosts let go ever talk. We'd have to pry QVC's mouth open to find out.

@Foxxee    Yes, in a famous case, A number of years ago, K-Mart laid off a bunch of older executives.  They then spent the next 10 years in court and it cost them millions.  Some said it led to the demise of the company.  I don't think QVC wants to repeat this experience, and companies don't do it all the time.

It's a clear violation of age discrimination law.  They're more likely to put up with an incompetent older worker than risk an EEOC mess.

@Kachina624

EEOC is a joke, and K-Mart was stupid.  They did nothing to cover up their intentions.

Lawyers working for companies use K-Mart and other cases as examples of what not to do.

No, QVC won't be charged with age discrimination unless all 400 employees are older and one of them decides to sue.

However, there is reason to be suspect when the only two hosts let go are over 60, very experienced and doing a good job from my perspective, much better than the younger hosts.
