I am thinking of buying a new car and I am almost certain that the dealer will not give me what I would like to get for my current car. A co-worker told me about Carmax. Has anyone had any experience selling a car to Carmax or We Buy Any Car? Thanks in advance!

why dont you try to sell it yourself? you will generally get more money when you sell it yourself than if you go through either the dealer OR carmax.

I sold my late mother's Jeep to Carmax. You take the car in, one of their appraiser's takes a look at the car (they have a list of items they have to check out) & they give you a written offer that's good for 7 days. If it's an older vehicle, the price they offer you is what the same type of vehicle sold for at a recent auto auction. I got $5,000 for my mom's car, which was a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that needed $1,800 in mechanical work but was in mint condition otherwise with very low mileage. When you sell your car to them, you get the check the same day.It was a very easy transaction & when I'm ready to sell my car, I'll be taking it to CarMax to see what they'd offer & then see what the dealership will offer. Whoever offers more gets the car.

I would sell the car myself.

If you don't like dealing with strangers coming to your house Carmax is a good idea. I sold one car to them and got a fair price. Plus it was a no hassle transaction.

We had a trade in with Carmax and they gave us more than expected.

We've never sold a car ourselves. We've been reluctant because you never know who you are selling the car to, they may say that something was wrong with the care and you didn't disclose the problem and then come back to you saying you have to fix it. They can get lawyers involved and it can become a mess.

We go to edmunds.com, get the true market price for the car, retail, dealer trade and owner sell. We bring the copy into the dealership and tell them what we want for the car. They usually get pretty close to what the auto is worth on the dealer trade price.

We also look up the price that people are paying for the new car (also found at edmunds) and we bring a copy of that to the dealer too.

My husband negotiates the price for the car he wants to buy and I negotiate the price for the car I want. When he does it, I have to walk away{#emotions_dlg.w00t}.

In this day and age, I, for one, wouldn't try to sell a car from home. Would you let a stranger take the car for a test drive (alone) or would you or your dh go with them and take a chance of being killed? Too frightening.

we have done this too many times to even remember and have NEVER had a problem. most people want their mechanic to look at it also. if you have an independent mechanic he may even let you leave the car at the shop so that people can check out the car there. you get their keys OR have them leave a family member as collateral.....LOL.

you write a bill of sale that says you are selling the car as is, sign the back of the title and make sure there are no liens listed on the front, give them any inspection/smog papers as needed for your state, and get the money. it really is quite easy.

I live in a very safe area of San Diego and thought I would have no issues selling my car from home. I placed a for sale ad in the AutoTrader. A young man wanted to see the car and I gave him my address. He was very polite and glanced over the car. He told me he was ready to buy it and had the cash on him. Then he asked if he could use my bathroom. Something told me it was not a good idea to let him in the house and I told him there was a gas station nearby and gave him directions. He smiled and said he would be right back then left. He never returned. The whole thing made me uneasy so I ended the ad and traded in my car at a dealership. Since then I have never placed a for sale ad in the paper.
