Carjackers Couldn't Drive Manual Transmission.. - Page 3

My husband's first car (when we got married) was an old classic p1800 (I think it was a Volvo sport's car) Manual transmission. A couple of kids stole it, but it was found down the street from us. They couldn't figure out how to drive it. It was an ancient car to begin with. I think the old British TV show "The Saint" drove this car. That's how it got famous. They left it in the middle of the street. But it was Sunday with few cars on the road. My husband ran down the street and drove it back. I don't think we ever reported it. Or if we did, I can't remember. It was very cute and slung low on it's wheels. My husband proposed to me in that car, driving up I95.

I can't drive manual transmssion. And my husband tried to teach me. Bad idea. Especially stopped at a redlight on a hill.....

And a clock! I worked in the office of a high school. Students would come in and ask what time it is. I pointed to the clock and they would ask me "what time is it?"! They could not tell time.

Well it's ok to be a little smug, but these kids probably understand things many of us don't. Each generation has their strengths , but we only know what we've been taught and what is our experience.

Ashamed to admit I could tell time, but I didn't know what "half past" meant. My excuse was I was in the process of learning English. I had asked for the time (I was waiting for my Dad ...I was 9 years old) It was OK, but that person could have said 2:30 or something...... I actually asked my father what it meant!

I can't drive one either. I did learn many decades ago but could only drive it if I absolutely had to. Now too much time has gone by and I just don't remember how.

What I do remember was how stressful it was trying to get it going forward when stopped on a hill. At my age I try to reduce stress as much as possible.

My Grandfather taught me how to drive a stick shift when I was 12. in 1962. He would take me to a little park on his employers grounds that had a long driveway down to the picnic area and he would let me drive up and down that driveway. I got my drivers license at 16 so I knew how to drive a stick and have never forgotten. These young idiots who steel cars should be prosecuted to the max. They know better !!. I'm glad they were caught !

Trucker daughter's personal vehicles are always manual. Last time she took her truck in for service, she was called from the waiting room to drive her truck into the garage because none of the mechanics who were working could drive a manual transmission!!

@RedTop I thought all big rig tractors had manual transmission. No?

I've always wanted to see the inside of one that has a sleeper compartment. I'd love to take a ride in a tractor-trailer.
