Re: Carjackers Couldn't Drive Manual Transmission..

@KathyM23

Love my old Ranger.  I use it to haul stuff to the recycle station near my house and pick up mulch when needed.  Cat LOL

My husband used it as a work truck for a few years, so it shows wear, but I still love it.

I remember buying it brand new and it was a beauty!

My husband's first car (when we got married) was an old classic p1800 (I think it was a Volvo sport's car) Manual transmission.  A couple of kids stole it, but it was found down the street from us.  They couldn't figure out how to drive it.  It was an ancient car to begin with.  I think the old British TV show "The Saint" drove this car.  That's how it got famous. They left it in the middle of the street.  But it was Sunday with few cars on the road.  My husband ran down the street and drove it back. I don't think we ever reported it.  Or if we did, I can't remember. It was very cute and slung low on it's wheels.  My husband proposed to me in that car, driving up I95.

I can't drive manual transmssion.  And my husband tried to teach me.  Bad idea.  Especially stopped at a redlight on a hill.....

I can't drive one either.  I did learn many decades ago but could only drive it if I absolutely had to.  Now too much time has gone by and I just don't remember how.

What I do remember was how stressful it was trying to get it going forward when stopped on a hill.  At my age I try to reduce stress as much as possible.

For those that don't know.....the car would start to slip backwards.  You have rock the car, waiting for the light to change.

I know how to drive a manual transmission, but don't like at all.  Haven't driven one in forever.

Re: Carjackers Couldn't Drive Manual Transmission..

Manual tranmission cars are always cheaper!  They start at rock bottom when you want to buy a new car. Only ones in my family that could drive manual is my brother (of course, its the MANLY drive) my younger sister & my Dad.  My mom never drove.  I remember sitting in a car when I was dating in high school, with a boy telling me manual is the only way to drive.  The dreal driving. My sister in law (like me) tried to learn how but failed because spouse tried to teach.

From the internet:

What percentage of people still drive manual?

Sixty-six percent of American drivers know how to drive a manual transmission, and 55 percent have owned or leased one in their lifetime. That's surprising, given that only 13 percent of the models for sale even offer one.

I prefer driving a stick. My 2010 Mustang is a stick, though my husband has always preferred standard.

Re: Carjackers Couldn't Drive Manual Transmission..

Learned to drive in a vacuum manual, column shift, 1947 Chevy Sedan. Have raced and driven manual shifts throughout my driving life. 1 of our current vehicles has a 5 speed manual transmission and is very easy to drive, whether on level ground, or stopped at a red light, and with a steep backward downhill slope.

Decades older, but my driving skills have not diminished. I would love to drive my fastest Drag race car, to go through those gears 1 more quick run time. What a thrill that was flying down those many Drag Strips.

I , sort of , collect Corvettes.....all 3 are manual transmission. I would never drive anything but manuals ( given a choice).
