Carbon Monoxide detectors- do you have one?

If you don't, please buy one and plug it in today. Make it a priority.

Ours went off this morning at 4:15. Not just the low battery beep, but a full fledged alarm. Ours is digital. When I got out in the hall, it had a substantial reading. We called 911 and went out on our front porch.

The fire dept. came immediately and found the problem. It was with our gas stove. The burners were all turned off, but one of the gas cover thingys was not on correctly and that caused the problem. They opened our windows and turned on our ceiling fans and stayed until they got a reading of 6 which is under the 8 at which they suggest evacuating. They were here quite awhile.

It's now 6 AM and we still have the doors and windows open, all ceiling fans on and a/c running constantly to get the remaining out. Not a breeze to be found in Atlanta this morning.

We have a two story house and to be honest, only have one detector. Our first and second floors are open. It did its job, but this morning, when Home Depot opens, I'll be there to buy a second one for our second story landing.

There was a story I read in the news I think last month. All electric home. Owners didn't have a detector. Fumes from a neighbor's grill came in through their a/c vent and caused a carbon monoxide buildup in their house.

So, I just wanted to pass this along to everyone. It's interesting- last month, my nephew moved out west. Just out of college, first apartment. One of my gifts to him was a carbon monoxide detector. I sent it out to him. I could just about see the eyes rolling from 3,000 miles away. But this morning I'll be checking with him to make sure it's plugged in.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
