Good for you!
I never understood why some people feel that they have to have a new car ever 2 - 3 years, when the "old" car is still perfectly good.

Usually when a sales person stops calling is because they "sold" the car you were interested in & the person paid higher than what you wanted to pay for it.
I am in the market for a new car. I have been researching for a year. The 2017 Ford Fiesta I want does not come out till October. Maybe the last few weeks of September.
I do not want all the bells & whistles. Just the basics-radio, automatic transmission & everything else that is "standard." No extras. I do not have the inclination of pursuing a Ph.D just to learn how to use all the bells & whistles.
After much researching, I am going the True Car route. Lucky for me, there is a "True Car" dealership 2 miles from me. So once the newer Fiestas comes out, I will be visiting the dealership on Sundays when the place is closed, check out all sticker prices & colors available to get the ball rolling when it's time to wheel & deal. A male will accompany me **just in case.**
SIDEBAR: The dealerships in my area hire HIGH SCHOOLERS to teach those interested in buying how to use all the gadgets these newer cars have now.
That's really a good idea because I still haven't figured what all the buttons are for!

Never understood the desire or interest men have in owning the newest and latest gadgets, etc. on new cars. And I sure don't care if they go l00 miles an hour. What for?
I will try to answer your questions. Just as you do not speak for all females, I am speaking as a man, not for men.
First I think you might be surprised how many woman have raced cars, even back to the year I mentioned in my other post. I never had a problem finding girls that wanted to go to the races with me. Many even helped me work on my cars at the track.
Like you don't "understand the desire or interest men have in cars and gadgets", I have never understood the desire for some women to wear more than 1 ring on their hand. I have seen some that have rings on all 10 digits and some I don't see how they can even bend their fingers.
I can tell you that my interest since 1950 "in gadgets" has followed me to this day. Electronics were 1 of my hobbies and even was able to make money installing and showing those that owned them, how to learn the ways to use them.
As far as the need to go 100mph? I raced cars because I loved the feel and sound and raw horsepower of my race cars. I also drove cars on the highways that had power. I drove mostly on 2 lane highways, in their day, and passing another vehicle was safer when you had a powerful engine. No stepping on the accelerator and hoping you car would pass before the oncoming vehicle got too close.
With lots of power, you pushed the gas pedal, and in short order you had quickly and safely made a legal pass on some of those very narrow, and not too smooth, 2 lane State highways.
Those are just a few reasons I still love cars, and electronic gadgets, that come without cars. Hope this gives you a "little glimpse" into why "this man" was/is interested in motor vehicles, and gadgets.

I haven't noticed the increase in ad's, to be honest.
I have always bought new cars. Did buy a few "beaters" years ago to drive in the winter to keep my "new cars" close to still new. Always sold them myself after 2 years and as one that has always kept my vehicles pristine, was always able to quickly sell them at "top, excellent" dollar.
Aha, you want a big Expedition, eh? We have a Mountaineer and love that SUV. But going to say, an Expedition or bigger yet, the Excursion? Way too big for us. Our Escape was a little too small and the Merc SUV is just the right size for our use and our interest in it's mpg numbers.
Last new car is our little 2010 gas miser. We use it primarily for it's 35-40mpg gas costs, but the all-wheel SUV is our winter go through snow vehicle when necessary. Not sure if I will be around to buy another vehicle, but if I do? It will have that "new car/vehicle smell", because it will be new.
Everyone is different and thank goodness 1 size does not fit all.

Thanks, @hckynutJohn, for taking the time and explaining your love of cars and "gadgets." You explained it very well. I especially understand the concept of "passing" another car and not having to worry whether you'll make it or not.
I think you might be the exception as to what most men love about a new car, so much they must lease them annually. I think they love them as a status symbol, the beauty of a car, and the power of the car. Many men could also love them as they might think their car says how successful they are. And the "power" seems to enter the picture, also.
I've never thought a car I drive says anything about me. The dealer was almost insisting I get a "vanity" license plate. Simply not interested -- no vanity car here.
Thanks again, John, for your good insight into your love of cars and gadgets.

@SeaMaiden, Hello to you,
I raced cars for many years and my top priority was?? Yep, you guessed it "safety". Sure, I raced some beautiful cars, but how they looked was never my top priority, not even 2nd. That belonged to "they had to be faster than my competitors", then maybe came their beauty.
The few commercials I do watch, I have seen Cadillacs and Chryslers moving very slowly down city streets. These of course are mostly 4 door sedans. Most usually reserve their "race course ads" for their sports coupes. I see just as much of 1 as the other. But like I've said, I buzz through most commercials.
"Truly sad"? New cars made much of my life happy, as does our home. Guess it is all about how one looks at their life. Have a good one,

@MoJoV wrote:@ShowMe,I agree. So many car commercials show the cars racing around streets. One even has kids on the sidewalk watching the car roar by. Not a pretty sight and how does that sell cars?
I just want a car that runs well and isn't a dented rust bucket. I drive a 5 year old Nissan Rogue, runs well, looks good. My DH drives a 15 year old Buick, pristine and rides like a dream. I doubt he would ever give that car up and why should he,it's never given any problems.
Never mind. I have already typed 2 posts with some alternative views on this topic?

@hckynut Lol, I hear you on all of that plus the speed!
I used to buy a new car as I drive them until they are truly dead. To repair would not be cost-effective dead. 200,000 plus miles dead.
When the boys came along, I needed to move from a 2-seater to a 4-seater, then to a 6-seater then to something that would hold many TALL menfolk plus gear (sports, school and hunting). The Expedition just made too much sense, lol.
The Excursion is NICE but I can't justify the cost, the size or the amount of gas it takes for the few times we hunt AND camp... not worth the cost.
Add in college, retirement....it just makes better financial sense to purchase a 2 year old vehicle with low mileage at CarMax.
My "fun" car is an old CJ7 that has pulled many a SUV out of stuck situation; give me a good ole Willie any day. Good friend has a CJ5 as well as an old Army Jeep from...early 50's? They are used on the farm, back roads only and to help others when needed in BAD weather.
But, if wishes were wings.....I DO love that new car smell as well as a bit of zip..... : )

I used to hate car commercials the most . . . until the advent of pharmaceutical commercials, which I despise. Legalized drug pushing and constant reminders of how practically anything can kill us . . . including the drugs they are pushing.
09-06-2016 02:06 PM
Hi @LilacTree, I hope today finds you a bit better than yesterday and the day before and!
I certainly agree with you on the Pharmaceutical Commercials, but now seeing also the many, I believe, class action lawsuit commercials also?
First the advertisement to have your doctor to prescribe X for you, then the attorneys commercials for lawsuits.
Oh how things have changed! Get well and stay well,
