According to CNN, the hacker called a friend and told her she had done the hack. Her friend notified the authorities.

It is a shame one person has access to so much data.

Re: Capital One Data Breach

Glad I don't have any type of accounts ẃith Capital One....Sorry for those impacted by this....

The main concern of the breach is identity theft....especially since it involved social security numbers....

Here we go again Woman Frustrated...one would think that these companies learned from previous data breaches and made the necessary upgrades to their systems in efforts to protect customer data. I am starting to think the very people hired to fix the breaches are the actual hackers IJS!

I posted this once before. Our lawyer's office was burglarized and ALL of his clients info ( Trusts, wills, estate info, SS and bank numbers, personal info etc) was stolen. An easy hit for info scammers....all the stuff they need to steal your identification big time and usually not much security. Good idea to ask whoever handles this for you how your info  is kept SAFE.

Just to be safe, I changed my account log-in credentials.

I receive an updated credit score and alerts from 2 separate sources updated frequently already, so that should help detect any changes, as well as alerts of purchases on my credit cards.

Finally, I took the advice from all of the articles I've read and put a freeze on my credit reports from all 3 services.  I shouldn't need any new credit that I can foresee, and unfreezing is easy and fast if necessary.

Now, nothing to do but monitor.

I wonder if anyone who has a Capital One account(s) and thinks that they may be impacted has received anything from the bank yet through the mail?

Their statements made it seem like those with compromised Social Security numbers would be notified, but it wasn't entirely clear.

Thanks.

@Johnnyeager   You won't necessarily have to 'thaw' all of them.  If and when the need comes to unfreeze, sometimes the creditor is able to tell you which one they generally use.

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.

I swear my information was one of the many hacked through Capital One.  I am now receiving so many scam emails.  Luckily, they automatically go to the junk mail folder and I block them without opening.  I am gradually receiving fewer and I'll be glad when they finally end.  I also set up security at the credit reporting agencies and changed all my passwords.
