I don't think she was asking for advice.

Its great you're taking steps to get a handle on your finances.  Sometimes just announcing your intentions helps with resolve.

@Pinkroses You can always get a refillable Visa Card, MC or even a refillable American Express to make online purchases and to use if you ever need a hotel room.  One of my siblings has an American Express card and I asked her where did you get that (knowing she didn't have the best credit to get one) and she told me it was not a credit card.  Her limit is whatever she puts in it.

I'm not encouraging the OP to get another "regular" credit card, but I think it's important generally (OP or anyone) to know that while *some* places will accept the "balance only" debit credit cards, many do not. There was a recent discussion in another thread about these cards. More and more businesses are not accepting them. So people should be aware that you can't assume you can use one everywhere you might need to. They are great, I mean that, but they're limited.

it took years dh and i paid off all our credit cards, and cut them up.

I have one credit card for emergency. It sits in drawer for an emergency. We pay cash for everything. I do have 1 large store credit card, i use it for my make up purchases and pay off card ASAP (when i get the delivery box--I pay the bill immediately).

I would also suggest not watching programs that lead you into temptation.  Don't watch QVC, etc.  Don't peruse eBay.  Remove those temptations and go out for a walk instead. Or read a book, etc.  Otherwise, you'll be likely to quickly drain your checking account when other needs (not wants) arise.  Good luck to you.

The bolded, underlined line is great advice. I no longer have cable so I don't watch any of the shopping channels. I check their  todays specials, but that's it. It has helped me cut way back on unnecessary spending. I purchased a lot of unnecessary stuff from HSN & Evine in the months after my mother died in 2012. I haven't used or worn much of what I purchased, it's been in my closet for 4 years.
