Hi, I am wondering what your electric bills cost in comparism to ours. And if you have central AC what temp do you keep your themostat at?
Our last electric bill was 280 dollars. (it is usually "roughly" 140 to 190 depending on the season). I nearly went through the roof! They read the meter every other month, and the other months are estimates.
I called to see why ours all but doubled the last month and was so high compared from last year at this time! They said that the estimate was too low, so now when they read it, that is why its so high (to make up for the low estimate the month before).
Yes its been hot here and the AC is on non stop. But it was hot last year at this time and it was way lower.
To add- It has nothing to do with increase in prices, this is increase in useage.
We had our temp set at 73, but since getting the bill weeks ago, I have it set at 75. My grandkids come here 2X a week, and think its cold at 73 or 75 and they often put throws on so I turn the thermostat up when they are here. But my husband and I think its just right at 75 now when we are here alone.
Lastly, when the next bill comes it will be an estimate, but the lady said I can call in a read if I want which may or may not be lower than their estimate and she will adjust the bill. So that is what I am going to do IF the bill is this high again.
Anyway, I was just wondering if others bills are this high in other areas? Oh and if this matters, our home is not a mansion. lol. Its a 3 bedroom, 2&1/2 bath house with kitchen, dining area, living room. and a rec room in the basement. (and a garage hooked to the house but the door there keeps the air from going in the garage). No attic.

I don't have AC, another type of cooler. My house is pretty small, too.

I JUST got my bill two days ago. It was $83.00. We have a high 2nd floor condo that's 1370 sq. feet. I didn't think it was too bad. We are in the south suburb of Chicago and until last week, it has not been that hot. More wet and muggy than hot.

We are on the budget plan for $120 a month.
We have two units. I keep the downstairs one at 75 and turn it up to 80 at night. The upstairs one gets turned down to 70 at night and 75 during the day.
We like it cold when we sleep.

I wish our electric bill were under $300. Between air conditioners and pool pump, our summer bills are never under $400. As my husband says, it's the price we pay for comfort. While our electric goes down in the winter, the increase in our fuel bills for heat, more than make up for the drop.

My last bill was something like $187. I'm cooling about 1200 sq feet. It's been very hot, high 90's low 100's and humid. The humidity makes a difference in how hard your unit works. I can tell you that I would be hot at 75. I try to keep mine around 72, but if I'm hot, I bump it down enough for it to kick on.
I do use small fans to circulate the air and that helps. Due to my multiple health problems, I can't be hot or I can't breathe.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I cant compare ours to all areas of the country but I am just curious. I see some are low, another way higher than ours.
I had asked about a budget and she said 180 a month. To me that was high b/c other months we pay 140 ish. Also in Winter we have gas heat and that bill is not near as much as our electric is year round. In winter the gas heat is approximately 78 a month.
