On any given summer day you can walk around my house, or wood pile, and see one as big, or bigger than this.

Our black rat snakes have thick bodies like this snake; our black racers have thinner bodies, and when out in an open space like this, they are moving fast and looking for a place to hide.

May be someone forgot to call Bergdorf Goodman so they can come and catch the snake in order for them to make a pair of snake skin shoes. (okay okay, I was just kidding)

@Dinaki Your post was SO funny!!!  I don't like snake print, and only bought a pair of boots because I liked the style.  They had a tiny stripe of snake print that can't be seen.  Most women can't stand snakes.  Why snake print is "big" is very surprising!

Can this snake ever be native to New York State ??

Looks like the problem we have in Florida with Python in

the Everglades .. people that bought them as small pets

and then they got to large to have in house .. so they let them

loose in the e

Everglades where they have no natural enemies... we have

to have a licensed snake hunt every year to control the

population .....

Surprisingly, I am not afraid of MOST snakes, and would like to have seen this one up close. My grandmother had tons of snakes on her rural property, so I regularly spotted them when I visited. That  might be the reason I admire, and respect them.🤷‍♀️ This one intrigues me though, because of it's size in a metro area. It's definitely impressive!🤔

Had I stumbled upon this one, I would have been ok, and just kept my distance. Had it been several of them...well...😁

Pooor bud, I hope he was NOT harmed.

All creatures great and small contribute to the fragile ecosystem known as life on earth and I for one, respect their right to dwell.

Personally, I like snakes and think they're cool. Literally and figuratively that is (cold blooded and all).

@RoughDraft That's probably why he lives there. He has lots of food. I'll bet there are more snakes down there because NYC is full of rats.

@ECBG  OMG!!!!  Whether or not it is a venomous snake would not be the issue as "it"  would make me hurt myself getting away.  An old man threw a snake at me as a child and they terrify me.  My mom had sent me to show him where the garden was at and let him pick some things.  Needless to say, that was his last visit to our home as she went off on him for doing me that way.

Gosh that is horrible.  He must have not had all his marbles if you know what I mean.

We have these black snakes in NC.  I see them mostly in the Spring and Early Fall, not so much when we have this really hot hot hot humid summer weather.  They are hiding like the rest of us.  And boy, they are fast when they move.  Scary, but they say they are good for the garden.

In the Spring they lay in the deep bermudagrass and pop their heads and necks up out of the grass like prairie dogs and oversee their territory.  Sometimes the hawks come down and swoop them up if they are smaller.  Most of the ones I've seen look just like the one pictured here.  I'm not fond of snakes, but if they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone.  A mutual understanding so to speak.  Woman Wink
