Re: Can It Really Be 1 in 5?

I agree.......sometimes not having gainful employment is a huge problem. Frustrations run very high, etc. Not condoning/excusing violence by any means...........just could be one of the reasons for the higher numbers/statistics.

I don't believe it. Some men are gay and aren't interested in females so that rules out their input. Some women aren't interested in men.

LR- The people you're talking about also have issues with domestic violence within their community.

If one in five admit it, I suspect the real ratio is higher.

There were only 520 men that were asked this question. I think you can prove just about anything if you set out to.

I don't believe that 1 in 5 men abuse women, no matter what some study of 520 men claims.

There are strict guidelines for taking a representative sample. If someone has fudged the numbers or taken from a biased sample, other statisticians will know it. It will come out.

I apologize for my ignorance on the topic.

I just found this ....http://www.huffingtonpost.com/soraya-chemaly/50-actual-facts-about-dom_b_2193904.html

I also looked at the stats from the Dept of Justice and the number of men who abuse their partners or spouses was very high.

To say I am astounded is putting it mildly.{#emotions_dlg.sad}

So the question is when will our society start addressing this problem by teaching little boys and girls that that behavior is unkind and unacceptable. It starts with the parents not hitting or verbally abusing their partner and their children. I'm tired of hearing it is a cultural thing.

What is most astounding is when you look at the 1 in 5 statistic it is a safe bet that we all know, live next to or with, work with or for at minimum one man that has used violence against his spouse or partner with the true number being much higher than one.

Violence against women peaks on Super Bowl Sunday...due to sore losers who gamble the rent money on the game!

I'm not kidding!!!!

Re: Can It Really Be 1 in 5?

I think some (many?) don't associate some things as "abuse", like pushing, grabbing, throwing things.

Abuse to some seems to require blood, broken bones, bruising, etc.

People need to be educated about what "abuse" really means and what it involves.

Wasn't Olympic diver Greg Louganis beaten by his partner and they were gay. Domestic violence is domestic violence. It says spouse or partner.
