Re: Can Dogs Still Get Kennel Cough If Immunized?

We learned it takes a week or several for the immuniztion to be affective.

Also I hope some part of the pecan is not caught and she is trying to cough it up.

A little peanut butter is ok but not nuts.

Pecans can cause stomach upset and sometimes obstruction. They also have a toxin in them that can cause seizures. I would let the vet know that as well.

I hope she'll be okay.

I'm glad she's on antibiotics if it is bordatella. That is an awful thing for dogs and their parents!

I always give my dogs the bordatella vaccine, too, and one of my dogs got kennel cough one time.  He was put on antibiotics and did get over it, but I felt awful for him.

I agree with on the bay about not letting dogs have pecans or other nuts.  That was my first thought when reading your post.  Then I Googled it and found out pecans can cause gastric stomach upset and cause obstruction.  There were various reasons that all nuts were not good for dogs.

Re: Can Dogs Still Get Kennel Cough If Immunized?

I just want to add that dogs do get cold viruses. Because a dog has cold symptoms it is not always kennel cough. A simple cold does not require antibiotics  for a dog any more than if we  had a cold virus..... it just has to run its course. The symptoms of kennel cough are obvious.  Much more severe than just a cold. And dogs can not catch a cold from people  nor can people catch a cold from a dog.

@on the bay

Everything you just said my vet said also. You are very knowledgeable!!

I did mention the pecans to the vet today--in fact, I called there 2 days ago when she was having the intestinal problems. They weren't concerned with the pecans, but she did mention the other possibility for the cough would be the sweet potato getting into her lungs. She listened to her lungs and they sounded clear. But, she told me if Emma doesn't improve on the antibiotic that we should get her back in for an x-ray. I can't even imagine how food would make it into the lung. What do they do about that?

So, it's not a 100% diagnosis. Emma is back to normal. playing, eating, etc. Fingers crossed she improves.

I just want to be clear that noone gave her nuts. She was able to counter surf and get the entire casserole over to the edge and she ate 1/4 of it before we noticed. (Labs are insanely good at it!) I also Googled both the sweet potatoes and the pecans and was worried so I called the vet and talked to the vet tech who said pecans aren't toxic. Your point is well taken about a pecan getting stuck. If her cough doesn't improve, we'll take her back for an x-ray.

@SeaMaiden

That's exactly what my husband said! All she has is a cough, so maybe it is just a cold. And, the antibiotic will be useless.

You say the symptoms of kennel cough are obvious. Can you say more about that?

@NickNack

What were your dog's symptoms? Our Emma seems fine except for the cough.

@MaggieinFL  From Google:

If your dog is affected with kennel cough, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
a strong cough, often with a “honking” sound - this is the most obvious symptom.
runny nose.
sneezing.
lethargy.
loss of appetite.
low fever

it sounds similar to croup cough like in babies

Kennel cough sounds like your dog is gagging and dry heaving. It's contagious to other dogs.

Re: Can Dogs Still Get Kennel Cough If Immunized?

I don't mean to be an alarmist @MaggieinFL, but all my dog had was "just a cough" and no other symptoms, and 3 weeks later (at the age of only 7) he was dead.

He had a very mild, slight cough that happened about 5 times a day.  Dr. thought it was allergies and put him on allergy meds.  After a week with no change, Dr. put him on an antibiotic.  Another week went by with no change.  The cough was not worsening, but wasn't getting better either, obviously.  And, again, it was a very slight barely noticable cough.

The vet took an x-ray and my dog had cancer all throughout his chest.  Aside from the cough, he appeared perfectly fine.  Anyway, he had the x-ray on a Thursday and four days later, he collapsed and died.

Good luck to you.  Hoping your dogs cough clears up quickly.
