This is always what happens after a wildland fire on what they call "burn scars". Colorado is having a terrible time with mud slides in the Durango area. They warn people to watch for these slides most of which are worse than the one pictured. There is now no vegetation to hold the soil.
We had a wonderful apple orchard in a canyon between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Everyone made an annual pilgrimage there to get apples as its the only orchard in the area. There was a fire in the mountains above the orchard, then a flash flood. Water filled with debris of huge rocks and logs washed down and destroyed the entire orchard. It was literally wipped off the map.

That’s hard to believe what a little rain can do. Not long ago you desperately needed the rain because of the fires. Wow!

Here's what happened to the Durango-Silverton Railroad after the 416 Fire this summer. Its fixed now and the little train is back in service.
