California Middle Class Tax Refund

[ Edited ]

For those fellow Californians, you can expect a refund up to $1050 via direct deposit or mail depending on the number of dependants and your state adjusted gross income for 2020.  The majority of refunds will be sent in October.  If you google California Middle Class Tax Refund, you can see the payments for each income level.

It was originally supposed to be a gas rebate for registered drivers, but it seems that now everyone is eligible for some amount if you filed taxes and made less than a certain amount in 2020.

What income level in California is considered to be Middle Class?

Are these Refunds paid out of Federal or State Tax Funds?

Do Middle Class Homeowners, that also pay Property Taxes, get a higher $$$ Refund?

Re: California Middle Class Tax Refund

What is the maximum income for a California refund?  That would be nice. We never qualify tho. I do know Jerry brown managed the money so well here we paid off debts and have a boatload in surplus we have saved. The surplus was passed to Newsom, and so far he hasn't spent it. I wonder if this is the surplus??

@hckynutjohn @shoekitty I deliberately left the income levels out of the original post because I thought it would cause a hoopla among non-CA residents.  For married and head of household residents, the AGI needs to be below $500,000.  For single residents, it's below $250,000.  It is being paid by the state due to a budget surplus.  Property tax is not a factor.

Many folks outside of CA don't realize the housing prices and cost of living here.

Thank you for your reply. Reading those numbers for middle class income surprised me. Think many in our state would be considered in the upper 1%.

I understand the COL for those in California. My wife's cousin lived there for several decades. When she retired from her State Job working as a 911 and other emergency calls, she could no longer afford to live there and moved back to my state.

Thanks again, appreciate your info.

@hckynutjohn I'm retired and DH will retire within the next few years.  CA is not the best retirement state for those on a fixed income, so we'll see what happens next.  Take care!

Funding is from State budget. Taxpayers would receive either $350, $250 or $200 based on their income level with an additional payment of the same amount if they have at least one dependent.

82% of the recipients are those whose AGI for 2020 was less than $75,000 single/$150,000 joint and will receive the highest amount of $350 single/$700 joint plus $350 for dependents for a maximum rebate of $1050.

Other payment amounts are on a sliding scale with maximum AGI of $250,000 single/$500,000 joint.

Oh, yes .....  Thanks for the reminder!   I believe it was originally thought to be going out in July, then October seemed to be the actual date.

I never saw anything to determine order of issuance .... alphbetical order for last names ... or some other way?

I decided to just wait and see .... it's always better than discovering you owe "them" money!  LOL
