Re: CROSSWORD PUZZLES NEVER FAIL

I haven't worked on a crossword puzzle in a long time.

I do have a Sudoku book of puzzles and the puzzles range from easy to difficult to challenging with some very hard variations in style at the end.

I used to enjoy cryptograms, too.

I just realized when I stopped working crossword puzzles.  It was right around the time I dropped my subscription to the local newspaper.  I would make a copy of the puzzles so my husband and I could work on the puzzles separately.

Etui:  an ornamental or embroidered holder for needles, cosmetics, etc.   May be a pin cushion at its extreme.

No one in my family did crossword puzzles.  I do them each day as well as have 20-30 puzzles going on Words With Friends app.

Repetition is a definite aid for retaining things !  The best way to learn multiplication tables in elementary school....wonder if they still emphasize those tables with all the technology now !

The first time we spent winter in FL, I missed doing the paper version of the daily puzzle.  Then I discovered that I could print it from my digital subscription !  Wonderful....

I enjoyed them more when they were strictly words.  Now, (at least in the Washington Post), so often there are phrases.

I do them several times a week (I get the paper every day).  But I also am somewhat addicted to jigsaw puzzles on my laptop.

Me too. I also like crosswords, but prefer to do them online. If I get stuck, it's easier and faster to use an online dictionary or search tool. I find a lot of foreign people, places and words I don't know.

No one in my immediate family that I know of regularly passed time doing crossword puzzles.   I worked with some ladies who worked night shift  as nursing techs on an inpatient psychiatric unit who were die hard crossword puzzle enthusiasts . They would bug me constantly to work on the crossword puzzles . They would give me a crossword book to work on. I often thought " When in Rome do as the Romans " but  frankly I was to busy  engaging in my duties to have time to fiddle with the puzzles . Funny, when I see a crossword puzzle , remember  those ladies .

Re: CROSSWORD PUZZLES NEVER FAIL

Beautiful family memories of crosswords, @tends2dogs ,  and others who mentioned family members doing them...

It's interesting to me that a fair number of people do the ones in daily or weekly papers--  I guess I've so detached from newspapers in general, that it doesn't occur to me... and for some reason I do like those nice chunky books that you can stuff in a purse or throw in the car.

I agree with you, @chickenbutt ,  that you can learn a lot of things and maybe promote your own mental alertness by doing them.

And a side effect for me is also, that, if they're not outrageously challenging, they have a sort of anti-stress effect.  You go into a little world constructed of words, images and ideas, and for a while, that's all that matters.

It's a hobby, like bird-watching, maybe, that some might consider "old-school" or slightly fuddy-duddy, but that's immaterial to me.  And love the fact that there'll always be another crossword to do-- you never need run out of them!

The sort of person who actually makes up crosswords is a mighty interesting individual, I'd wager!

Ha, ha, love that people on this thread have added to the list of constantly recurring words-- yes, like "ere",  @Elodie2 !
