COVID Discussion With A Nurse

A wonderful client of ours came into the store today.  She is a nurse at our large hospital. I asked her about what is going on with COVID and she said  the numbers are skewed, which I have read here on the boards.

If someone comes in from a car wreck and happens to test positive; later, he dies from the wreck injuries, because he tested positive for COVID, he is counted as a COVID death not injuries from the wreck that took his life!!!!!!  AMAZING!!!

This does not come as a surprise to me.

In fact, some of us have been saying that this is what's happening, for a while now.

I have heard this too, but never known anyone personally who was stating it. Thank you for sharing, @ECBG

This is why elective surgeries were cancelled to avoid healthy people from getting it.  Anyone who steps foot into a hospital is apparently at risk of getting covid.

And hopefully it will be a red flag to people so they start wondering why that would be happening...

This is not a new issue. It has been an ethical issue before COVID. If a patient has 2 or more things wrong with him/her and dies what is written on the death certificate? Doctors have been discussing this topic forever.

@germanshepherdlove I think the primary reason for the cancellation of elective surgeries is to keep hospitals from becoming overwhelmed by the surge in COVID hospitalizations.

You really don't see a difference between someone who has cancer and then gets pneumonia (for instance) vs someone in a car wreck who tests positive covid?? Really??

While I don't know how they should count those things, I believe you are right. We know of a twenty-two year old that was drunk, hit a tree, was thrown from his truck and paralyzed. His Covid is mild, but the family was told if he dies, it would be counted as a Covid death.
