99!😮
@Anonymous032819 @The condo is comprised of people that reside full time and people that come only part of the year. Only guests register when they enter the building. Owners do not register. There can be owners that are not in town, especially Canadian owners. There's a hotline open for family to call if they are looking for relatives.

@ROMARY wrote:Was there a rumor re: a lightning strike?
All I know is, that around here, lightning and thunder almost always shakes the ground, houses.
Deep vibrations, I guess from the sound of the thunder, etc.
Wishing and hoping for complete rescue and safety for all, including responders/rescue workers, and including the K9's.
@ROMARY @I don't know if lightning hit the building or not, but we had the worst lightning Ive ever seen here last night and we are the lightning capital of the world. It is possible that the building was hit. If lightning had anything to do with this the fire department and engineers will know. There were many strikes around my house last night. I had to unplug everything. All the car alarms were going off. I'm north of Surfside but was tracking the storm on radar. They had lightning. We have lightning strikes without rain sometimes too.

Collapsed Miami condo had been sinking into Earth as early as the 1990s, researchers say

@Anonymous032819I read it too. They interviewed a man who was just sleeping and he and wife attempted to get out via the front door but all he saw was rubble. They finally got them out with one of those fire department cherry pickers and lower them down to safety.
I can't even imagine. Not even. He said he heard something that sounded like thunder....

@Mindy D, where did you find the article posted in #34? I'd like to provide the link/source to someone that does not access these boards.

Barry Cohen and his wife were sound asleep in their beachside condominium outside Miami when he heard what he thought was a crack of thunder early Thursday. They got up, opened the door leading to their hallway and faced a pile of rubble and billowing smoke.
“I couldn’t walk out past my doorway,” said Cohen, 63, the former vice mayor of Surfside. “A gaping hole of rubble.”
The couple survived the collapse of Champlain Towers South Condo, just yards from the Atlantic surf, but at least one person was killed and rescuers were still combing the building's rubble for others.
Trying to get out, Cohen said he and his wife tried to take stairs down to the pool area, only to find that door wouldn’t open. They descended to the basement and found rising water there.
The couple returned upstairs, screaming for help. There were eventually brought to safety on a cherry-picker that firefighters used to lower people to the ground, he said.
“I thank them,” Cohen said. “They had such a hard job. It’s amazing what they do. I’m always happy to be alive, but I’m even happier today.”
This sounds like it was sinking. How does one "reclaim" a wetland?

@@The reclamation in this case was accomplished by hauling in soil and rock fro inland and depositing the fill. The areas were first drained using pumps. This effort took place in the twenties and thirties.

gertrudecloset,
My heart was pounding and my mouth agape until I read how Mr. Cohen and his wife were ultimately rescued.
I cannot even imagine the panic that surely was in their heart.
