Re: COMFORT FOODS Your Grandmother Made!😊

Those were the good old days !  Fried Chicken, fried potatoes and onions,  fried catfish, navy beans with ham, greens with ham hocks. Banana pudding. Sweet potato pie and baked sweet potatoes. Corn bread. This post took me back to when life was simple.

My Italian immigrant paternal grandmother would make us spaghetti cutting it up fine with a fork, very little sauce and lots of grated cheese on it. For dessert she would give us saltine crackers with honey on top.Still eat crackers like that to this day.

My maternal grandmother was not well enough to cook meals for us, but I remember having saltine crackers with butter spread on them at her house.  She always had Junket (rennet custard) ready to make and we couldn't wait for it to set.  I also associate all of our Polish/German traditional dishes with her because she brought my mother and aunt up in that tradition and they made those dishes when we visited her for holidays and special occasions.

@deedledee Welcome!🥰 I ENJOYED❤ reading your nostalgic post!😊 Those precious memories stay with us for a lifetime!✨ I have NEVER heard of saltines with honey, but can see how the salty/sweet combo would be palate pleasing!😁

THANK you SO much for caring to share such special, comforting memories this afternoon!🤗

Simple?  LOL.  Those dinners were a lot of work!

I never had fried chicken, other than in a tv dinner, until I was 12 or so and a KFC opened up in our town.  It was packed back then.

Every Sunday without fail my grandmother made homemade chicken soup.  Every Saturday morning she would make her noodles and set them out to dry.  The next day they were in her soup and she made the best soup.

@mildoo Welcome!🥰 Wow! I used to LOVE❤ chicken noodle soup, and prepared it for my children when they were sick. I now make them for any sick family member.❤ However, I use store bought egg noodles.😁 I especially like how your dear grandmother MADE noodles the day before. That is LOVE.💝

THANK you SO much for caring to share your comfoting memories this afternooon!🤗

Love this topic! @SandySparkles, thanks for starting this thread.

The 3 things I remember loving that my maternal Grandmother made was....1. delicious tapioca pudding (she used to make a huge pot of it). 2. Cream of Mushroom soup (wish I had her recipe but was to young to think to ask). 3. Fried fish with a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce (she would make this on Fridays when I was little and stayed with her during summer vacation). To this day, I love eating this and think of her when I do.

Paternal Grandmother...loved her home made meatballs and red gravy (sauce). Sunday pasta dinners at her house were wonderful. She was from Sicily and made delicous Italian food!!!

@Lovestheshores Welcome!🥰 I am glad you are enjoying the thread!❤ All of your memories sound WONDERFUL✨, but the Cream of Mushroom soup made me smile!😁 It is my favorite homemade soup!!!😊 I have also enjoyed reading of Italian grandmothers serving meatballs and gravy for Sunday dinners! That is SO special!😊

Re: COMFORT FOODS Your Grandmother Made!😊

@cheriere,

MY father and I would go deep sea fishing when I was young and sometimes casting straight from the beach but we mostly went on the 4 or 8 hour boats.

We mostly caught big blue fish and he taught me how to clean blowfish, which I know you need a license for now. There were also sand sharks but we always threw them back. Once a bluefish took a chunk out of his thumb! He called me his fishing buddySmiley Happy

We would clean the fish outside on a long wooden table and my step mother would bake it with wine stuffing! It was so good!I don't think I've ever had catfish but I know my father did. He liked it. I think he had it once from Bob Evans too. His favorite restaurant lol!

His idea of a great dinner was a can of corned beef hash with an egg and ketchup on top-he was so proud. But he also made me steaks and mushrooms before a swim meet.

Both of my grandma's could make the best meals with so little money and ingredients.  I still don't know how they did it!

Homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast was incredible!  On the weekends she'd make chocolate syrup on the stove to go over the biscuits as well!😃❤️

A favorite dinner was fried catfish she'd make.  My papaw would take me fishing and she'd fry whatever we brought back.😃❤️

@cheriere Welcome!🥰 I always say they made MAGIC in the kitchen with few pennies!😁 Biscuits and gravy are such a hearty breakfast!👍 My dear daughter-in-law served that once for breakfast, and it was quite satisfying!😊

My dear mother and uncles LOVED❤ fishing every chance they got, and catfish was enjoyed often during summer months.❤ You were SO fortunate to be able to fish with your Paw Paw. 😁Those memories are PRICELESS!💝

THANK you SO much for caring to share such sweet memories this afternoon!🤗

Re: COMFORT FOODS Your Grandmother Made!😊

Only one grandmother was alive when I was born.  Comfort was not a word associated with her.
