CALIFORNIA relo ideas?

After lots of research and weighing options, I have tentatively decided to move to California sometime in the near future. A friend of mine is also moving out there to be near her son who currently lives in North Hollywood. I would love to hear from anyone with suggestions of areas near there that is safe, reasonably affordable and close to shopping and cultural activities. I would rather live in a nice, smaller place in a good neighborhood than a big place in a questionable area. Pasadena looks nice to me. Any suggestions?
