I had mine filled in this Spring. It won't be completed till next Spring, after waiting for the dirt to settle, then top layer will be added, smoothed out and new landscaping put in. It was an 18' x 36' inground pool and we also had many years of fun in and around it, but, it was old and the upkeep and repairs were getting out of control. Time to go.

Re: Bye Bye to our Pool

[ Edited ]

We never had a in the ground pool, but my sister did and also had hers filled in some years ago.  She loves having her backyard with many beautiful flowers and garden.  You will too!  Many great memories,  but now time to move to make new memories.  Best wishes and enjoy your new backyard!

p.s. Both my adult son and daughter also rescue cats. They're volunteers for our local TNR.  We're a kitty loving family here..

@We rescue cats Your view is so beautiful. It must feel a little bittersweet, and like an end to an era, and at least you enjoyed it fully for many years, as you say.

But, that setting will now be serene and fully open and I'm sure you'll enjoy it in a new way for years to come. Whenever we visit PA (usually going to Longwood Gardens area) we always marvel at the beautiful areas, serene settings and pretty farmland we drive through. Pretty state. You're lucky to have all that land and the views around you. Perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffees, evening drinks, sunrises and/or sunsets, I'm sure. 🌅🌄

Oww -- that hurt to see how they dug it all up and made short work of it!  It must have been really nice having it and enjoying it all those years.  I'm sure you did feel a lot of sadness seeing it go!  But I certainly understand your decision to simplify and make it easier and also to save a lot of $$$.  I have a friend who had a gorgeous pool for most of her life and when she and her husband sold their home and built another one, they opted for no pool.

I would be sad to see that pool go!  It looked like a lovely spot.  I do understand your decision though.  Living in New England we have a short season for swimming so we never had a pool.  DH always said it was not worth the money in this part of the country.

Plus we're in RI and not far from the glorious ocean!   Enjoy your new beautiful retreat Smiley Happy

@We rescue cats   What a gorgeous setting but I completely understand your decision to fill it in. We also have an inground pool and it is indeed a money pit and a lot of work.  We're in the northeast, and honestly the pool is only open maybe three months a year.  And that's a generous estimate. May I ask what type of contractor you called to do the work?  I have no idea who would do that type of work.

Your backyard/land  is just beautiful!  We definetely dont get as much use out of our pool as when the kids were at home.  The grandkids still use it some but since my daughters bests friend and neighbor had a pool put in they use it less.  I still like to sit out by the pool and find it relaxing.

It is a bit of work but since we are both retired its not a big deal, we paid someone to take care of it for the first 25 years but a year ago we fired them, they weren't doing a good job anymore and it really isn't a lot of work we just have to remember to do things weekly.

I find that when its hot enough to use the pool I don't even want to go outside, I hole up inside with the AC on.

We wanted a house with a pool, but found one that absolutely checked every box we needed with all the room we'll ever need but no pool.  We were going to add one but Covid came along so we make do with a hot tub!  Woman Very Happy

@LindaSal .......I am in RI also and I agree about the ocean. Nothing can ever beat ocean

"swimming"....Now, in NJ, where my main residence is, I have a pool but it is heated and I get a lot more time out of it. I am probably a lot closer to the Jersey shore but I have not been down there in 15 years...Conn is my birthplace and RI my April to October home..
