My grandmother gave me that prudent advice when I was a teenager, and had just discovered my love for shopping with my allowance. She was referring to clothes at the time, but I never forgot it.😊

What you're describing is impulse shopping and it's a dangerous mindset.

Salespeople use this tactic to part you with your money-"when it's gone it's gone so better hurry"

@Ladybig724. Even though it is a sales tactic it can also be true as the OP points out.

@bonnie f   Whenever I would try to tell DH this when we were newly together, he would say "better get 'em," lol.  Now, he is complaining about the stash of TP, papaer towels, and kleenex I bought recently, told him they will get used, and I don't want to be without them again.

If I really love it and don't get it, it will be gone when I come back, without a doubt.

That's how I shop at stores like Homegoods and Ross. At other stores, I wait for sales.

Definitely it can be this. But it has been a reality now for decades, that well made things, or just having the availability of the exact same item over the course of time, is gone.

When I was a kid, you could go to the shoe store and buy a brand and style of shoe. You could wear it for a year or more, decide it was the most comfortable and long wearing shoe, go back and get another pair next year, the year after and the year after that. The same thing with kitchen items like pots and pans, or linens like sheets and towels or clothing.

There used to be a longevity in quality and style. But those days have been gone for a very long time.

There are some things I know I will need on a continual basis (say ladies underwear). I found a brand that I couldn't believe the comfort and fit and QUALITY.  I went back and stocked up, because I know that even if they make the same brand and style, the quality of the materials is likely to be reduced. Sure enough, I went back a couple of years later and that is exactly what happened.

I had trouble finding good sheets after the really thick and fat mattresses came out. My old standard sheets that I'd had for decades, and were still good, didn't fit the new thick mattresses, and I'd tried so many new ones, all sub standard. I finally found a brand at Sam's Club, loved them, and the quality, went back and bought several more. Tried again about a year later to add to what I had, and while the same brand, the material was thinner, fewer pillow cases in the package, and just not the same quality.

So I agree we have to be careful not to fill our spaces with stuff we don't need, but it is imperative in these times to buy extra of things you find that you really love the quality and know you will need in the foreseeable future. Manufacturers are changing things so quickly, and it seems many things are a one and done in production, or very limited runs before the 'new and improved' or updated styles replace them.
