I keep it in the fridge unless I know we will be using it later in the day on something.

My mom always left it out on the counter in a plain old covered butter dish.

I've always kept it in the fridge.

I take it out and let it sit on the counter to get it soft when I bake.

We use Kerrygold butter. I always have some in the refrigerator & freezer. We keep a stick in the butter boat that has water under it on the counter.

I use Kerrygold too and also keep it in a butter boat on the counter. I like warm muffins with ample butter for breakfast.

My mother always buttered the bread when she made sandwiches. Does anyone do that?

Yes, my Mom always put butter on her sandwiches.

The stick of butter I am using is in a butter dish on the counter. All the other sticks are in the freezer. Butter can sit out two or three weeks on the counter, never a problem.

Actually so can margarine.

Butter stays in the fridge.  Extra stash is frozen.  For immediate use on toast or waffles, I like spreadable butter in tubs.  There are many brands and all are OK to me, even store brands.

@IdahoGram

What's a butter bell?   Never heard of that.

I don't know if this is called a butter bell, but I bought it from Amazon. You put a stick of soften butter in a bell shaped lid, turn it upside down in a bowl with a little cold water in it, rechange the water every few days. I think they just call it a butter keeper. Keeps it soft, and I've never had it spoil. This whole thing is probably the size of a cup..

They say that butter doesn't have to be refrigerated and when I was a kid, the butter stayed out in a overed butter dish on the kitchen table.  I keep my butter in the fridge, I don't know anyone today who doesn't refrigerate butter.
