I think in general we have lost respect and civility towards each other. Look at our politicians, and on almost every forum you can find people responding in rude, racists, foul mouthed responses, if it is allowed. I do think we contribute to the bullying environment where the guy with the loudest voice can intimidate others, and bystanders don't jump in. We don't have that community feeling I felt as a child, where every parent looked out for other's children when they were out of doors. We don't accept newcomers without wondering what they are all about, are they trolls, what game are they playing. We are suspicious of most everyone. It is often safer to communicate on-line than to face strangers in the real world.

I think if you look at the history of politics in this country it has always been volitile. Yes, online communications are rife with ugliness but that is due to the anonymity in my opinion. In real life I find most people to be friendly and civil. I have a home based business and have met so many great folks.

I keep an eye out for my neighbors kids. (Well, I used to they are almost grown now!) But I still keep an eye out in case they have car trouble or whatever. I talk to my neighbors and pet their dogs. We look out for each other.

Yes, I see it to varying degrees in real life. Here, as the rest of the internet, it can be over the top.

Yes, I agree with the statement. I have noticed so much less civility in the past couple of years. It is disturbing. Never mind chat rooms and blogs. They feed themselves.

me too--people waiting for someone to make a mistake or purposefully "misunderstand" then you get called out - a,by a lot of posters---it's humiliating

ITA - the nasty personal digs. I've been to other boards where there's disagreement, but it's easier for people to just agree to disagree. Around here it's like not one thing can be let to slip and EVERYTHING is taken very personally and responded to accordingly. There's also a prevalent tag team here and they seem to show up in bunches and just attack attack attack one poster mercilessly.

in my RL, I'm appreciated and loved--it's shocking that we (Americans would be rude to newcomers and strangers--I even smile at homeless--why be mean?
