I spent a weekend with four other women at a cabin in the resort town of Ruidoso, NM several years ago.  We were coming back from dinner along a very dark, remote gravel road going about 20mph, when suddenly a bull elk about the size of the one pictured. stepped right in front of us just 6 or so feet away.  What a thrill that was!  I couldn't get over how huge he was super close up.  He didn't even glance at us, just continued on his way across the road.

@dancingwoman Beautiful picture!

We trailered to Benezette 2 years ago to camp and ride our horses on the trails while the bulls were bugling.  At night some of them actually slept in the grass near our trailers. It was amazing!

Last year we went to Western Pennsylvania to see the elk. They drew quite a crowd. And I must say the bugling could be heard from great distances.

I wasn't thrilled when my husband talked about going. BUT I really did enjoy seeing the elk herds and listening to them bugling.

@drizzellla Their bugling really is an eerie sound, isn't it?

We enjoyed our time at Benezette even though the nights were cold.  It was a wonderful experience that I wouldn't trade for anything!
