Fate whispers to her, "You cannot withstand the storm." She whispers back, "I am the storm."

Last December I just turned 64 and fell and broke elbow and had to have surgery.  I am right handed and it was my right elbow.  You will adjust by using your other arm more than you thought you could.  I have a plastic arm cover that I could pull over the soft cast and the end was tight. If you have a shower nozzle that has a long cord on it you can wet yourself down and soap up and then spray down and just try to avoid the arm.  Its not ideal but you have to do the best you can.  I did not wear makeup for about three months.

I'm so sorry you broke your arm.  Having a broken bone is just awful.

Get the cast cover.  I had one for my leg when I broke my foot.  It made showering so much easier.  You don't want to take a chance and get that cast wet.

Good luck.

@chihuahuamom

oh My!  I can not help you with your question, but, just want to tell you how sorry I am to hear this... I am so afraid of falling and like you breakiing an arm or wrist... I hope others will give you good hints in how to deal with everyday stuff while healing.  Best wishes to you.

For showers, obtain disposable veterinary medicine gloves for large animals.  They can be found on line for approx. $15/box(of 100).  They have fingers and are supple plastic which are long enough to go to the shoulders.  The gloves can be easily cut down in length.  To adhere the gloves for a watertight seal, use wide strips of "saran wrap press and seal". This is easier to remove and safer than tape or rubberbands.  The gloves can be hung up to dry and used for several times.

This is a nursing trick we used with my mother when she fractured both arms several years ago.

Best of luck.

There is a product specifically made for that. I suggest you go to any Walgreen or CVS and go down the aisle that sells canes, walkers etc. and you should find a product that covers your arm for washing. I know this because I used one a couple of years ago when I broke my wrist. I don't remember what it is called (mine was blue) but someone there should be able to help you. It looks like a giant blue Baggie but much thicker. You put your arm through the hole. It will fit tight but it does keep the water out better than a garbage bag.

When I broke my wrist, I went to one of the cheapo, walk in salons just to get my hair washed.

I am right handed and broke my right arm.  You will be amazed how adept you will become doing things with your left hand.  Initially my salon washed my hair or my husband helped.  Within a short amount of time I could wash and style it with one hand. (I bought a bonnet style hair dryer to dry it.)

After a few weeks I had a removable cast which was a big help.

Based on your name you will miss your piano. Because I had nerve damage, it was 6+ months before I could play again.

OMGosh........I'm so sorry to hear this.  Wishing you a quick, complete recovery. Heart  ....  Please, everybody, try to be very careful.  I know, it sounds 'pushy', etc., etc., but no matter what age we are, we have to be on the alert for possible falls.  I'm always telling folks (even the younger ones) to 'be careful'.  Watch our steps, etc.  It's no fun recuperating from even a bad sprain.  Sending O/P (and all of us) good wishes.  Heart

Oh, I'm so sorry!  I did the same thing two years ago, at age 53.  Crushed the bones in my arm and it was my first time with a broken arm, too.

I went to the hairdresser to have my hair washed.  As far as bathing, I just held it out of the water.

I hope you heal quickly and successfully.
