I have no problem with these bulbs and I've never understood the fuss about them.

Have you read the package?

Not only are they known for off-color light, and not reaching their maximum light for quite awhile (not rec'd for areas like hallways where you need bright light immediately), they're toxic. Just Google what you need to do if you should happen to break one of these babies.

The newest version of energy saving lights don't contain any mercury at all. They are more expensive, but last even longer than the squiggle bulbs.

Of course they are constantly improving the technology!

Re: Broke a CFL lightbulb.....

Just be careful, wear padded gloves, and goggles when removing the ceiling bulbs. Just to be safe. I wouldn't worry as much about them if I were fairly positive that the people in the entire country would be extra safe when disposing them, keeping them out of the landfill, garbage, etc. etc. Bottom line, is that to be safe, almost everything depends on each of us. If each of us is seriously very careful, we wouldn't have the problems we have now and the problems for our future generations.

Yes, I'd feel a lot better about the non-mercury version(s), hopefully made here in the USA. Saves a lot of energy by not having to transport them across various oceans, etc. Locally made products, foods, etc. save tons of transportation energy. And no chance of spillage into our oceans via ships.

Re: Broke a CFL lightbulb.....

i have been trying to buy and store/hoard as many ""old -fashioned"" light bulbs that i can. i HATE the CFLs and the light they emit.....and they dont last any longer than the regular light bulbs nor did they save me anything on my electric bill.

They DO last a lot longer and they do save money.

Maybe you didn't change out enough bulbs to see a difference.

When I moved in here in 2009, the super installed a CFL bulb in the front outdoor light. It has been on 24/7 for all those years, and is still going strong.

I HATE CFL bulbs.

I hope the idiots who decided to force companies to stop making the old bulbs are overcome by poisonous fumes, and people who are more responsible can step in and get rid of those stupid things.

i actually did change out every bulb when they first came out....i was excited to be "saving money".....but i didnt, there was no significant change in my bill at all AND i absolutely hated the light it emitted.they also do not work well on light fixtures that have dimmers, which many of my lights are on.

i will just be buying as many regular lightbulbs that i can get my hands on. i do have a stockpile of some already.

I don't doubt your experience, but perhaps it was the early bulbs? Several years ago, we changed out nearly all the bulbs, in a house that's very old and really uses a lot of electricity, and we saw a noticeable difference in the electric bill without changing anything.

I can understand your frustration with the light. I experimented with different bulbs, too, because I have atypical chronic migraines, but I've found no problems.

It takes some reading, since certain CFLs are not meant for dimmers, or for enclosed fixtures, or perhaps are meant to be upright instead of downward facing. I looked up most of it on Consumer Reports' website (if memory serves) and printed it out, and got the proper bulbs for each fixture.

Personally, I don't care how long they last; if they have mercury in them, I don't want them in my home.

Re: Broke a CFL lightbulb.....

my house is old--we have wall sconces here and there and a chandelier--both use the ""candle"" shape bulbs --Mr Sylvia said those are available in new bulbs and with both sizes I hate that blue light but Mr s doesn't seem worried and he is a meticulous guy
