I'm in California and just went to look at the package of CFL bulbs I have. They say "If a CFL should break in your home, please visit www.energystar.gov website under clean-up guidelines for proper clean up instructions." Nothing at all about calling the EPA on either the packaging or in the clean up instructions.

I don't know if you have a different brand but the most recent bulbs we bought (at Costco) said exactly that (call the EPA).

Out here people have fussed so much about it (lots of seniors on tight budgets) that the local hardware stores have assured people they have enough inventory for the next year, but of course that depends on how many people start hoarding them. That reminds me, I need to pick up some lightbulbs.

I say revolt. I won't use them regardless as my cats knock lamps over all the time. And how do I keep six of them out of a room with no doors and what if I'm not home. Some things are better left alone and this would be one of them. Do a search for the loophole in this law and you'll be happy to see there is one.

Oh wonderful .... we will all keel over before the EPA shows up to clean up. Before long we will be back to burning candles and going to bed early in the evening when it's too dark to do anything. Oh, wait, I already do that part. LOL

I love the EPA's advice that you should dispose of them properly - but if your community doesn't have this set up, just throw them in your trash.

I guess some landfills are ok to pollute.

• Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
• Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash.

I admit I haven't taken the time to put research into this, but it is my understanding that they will stop producing the old bulbs altogether, that the 75watt bulbs are no longer being produced and 40w and 60w will follow soon. I certainly hope I am mistaken.
