I just hate seeing them close, and I can't even imagine the day when there are no more shopping malls. It makes me so terribly sad. Does anyone else feel this way?

No. The world is always evolving, and we need to move with the times. It is what makes society work.

Mom and Pops have been struggling for some time....the days of the big boxes and online ordering have arrived.

Things change...and they stay the same. Amazon opened 2 book stores in Manhattan.

The key word is 'evolving'. Personally, I don't see fewer options as indicative of evolving... I'd also questions how well society is actually working at this point... Moving with the times, to me, doesn't mean willingly giving up what has had value...
Just a different point of view...

There is a very small mall in the town where I live and we have very few stores left in it. Sad because I enjoy getting out of the house and shopping. I love to try on clothes and see what is available. I don't enjoy online shopping nearly as much.

The mall in our area has slowly been losing stores, ie, Macy's, JCP, Sears and the smaller stores inside. In fact, I had to go over to Dillard's in this mall & was kinda surprised very few stores left.
Then recently, a article in our paper said a investment company bought it and are planning office space, stores, drs offices, hairdresser, etc. with condos on the 2nd floor. Interesting concept.
The other "strip" mall is now empty. Toys R Us and Target were the big stores ...it's terrible to see -- just desolate.
Although, they have planned new strip mall w/ movie theatres and restaurants in Fall, 2019 not far from us.

I’m not a shopper but I do still enjoy going to our local mom and pop stores. Yes, there are fewer of them which is sad to me.
My husband had a small office furniture business for many years. He was able to survive when a larger furniture business came in but once the internet became popular he couldn’t justify staying open. People would rather pay a lot less for cheaply made stuff and when the drawers got stuck or a leg got bent they’d just throw them out and buy new ones.

I hate to see it too, @Sue98. This was the first year in very many that I didn't get to go to Toys R Us to shop for the little ones in the family. I know times are evolving, but I like to go in and look. I don't like ordering nearly everything off the internet.
We had to order a console for our new tv and we got it yesterday. Broken. Now, true if we had been able to find one that wasn't made in China or India locally, we might have broke it on the way home.
But, I don't think so.

I find that highly annoying. Bezos killed off so many bookstores and now is opening his own. ☹️
