It happens.  You have to reset by avoiding those afternoon naps.  Don't drink coffee, that's a stimulant that will still be in your system when you want to sleep.  Push yourself to keep going.  Do housework, watch movies, call friends, cook a big dinner.  Stay busy and active.  Take a warm shower or bath before bed.  Don't watch TV an hour before bedtime.  If you do wake up in the middle of the night, don't get up.  Don't stressed about it, just relax your body and lie there.  You will go back to sleep.  You might have a couple of nights like this but will reset your normal sleep pattern.  I actually saw a sleep specialist, I thought I needed a sleep study.  He had me do things first and I was able to get back on track and this is what I do.

It's 8:40 and I made it through the afternoon. I've got to keep it up. Thanks for all of your feedback, it helps to know I'm not alone in this and your suggestions are helpful.

I'm a morning person AND a night owl.  I usually go to be around 12:00 or 1:00 when I start to get tired.  There is no way I can fall asleep without the TV on.  I'm always up around 5:00 or 6:00 if I'm lucky.  This has always been my pattern even when I was working. I'm never tired during the day nor feel  the need for a nap. "They" say get eight hours of sleep, don't drink coffee before bed, the room should be dark and cool.  I break all these "rules" and I am not tired all day with the amount of sleep I get.  I think our bodies know how much sleep we need.

I think many of us have sleep issues now and then.  I stop caffeine at noon time as it seems to stay in my system forever.   I also stop drinking a couple of hours before bed.

I have always been a good sleeper, one of those babies that slept through the night upon coming home from the hospital according to my mom.   Always was an early to bed, early to rise person but I have found too that in the last few years I do the same as many of you.  Fall asleep at my usual time and am awake from about 2:00 to 4:00 am, fall back to sleep and generally up by 6:00am.     I do agree that sleep heals the body, seems the older we get the less we are able to sleep for one reason or another........that with age harms the body.

Could it be a medication?  It can take a bit show up, but boy how they can mess with sleep.

Re-set you metabolism by introducing your body to some exercise. It doesn't have to be anything drastic. Just a simple walk outdoors. I'm an avid walker and sleep like a baby every night.

Re: Breaking The Cycle.

[ Edited ]

It took me 3 months to establish a new sleep pattern when I worked and switched from working nightshift to dayshift.

In the beginning I listened to my body and went to bed when I felt tired until I eventually established bedtime between 9:30-10:00 and alarm at 6 a.m.

I am retired and pretty settled into sleeping from 11 p.m.- 8:30 a.m.  I don't do well on less sleep.

Things are looking up, I only got up once last night, and slept till 7 AM.It's  a process , but I'm determined to resist the afternoon nap.

You might want to talk to your doctor.  There may be a variety of remedies available.

@Cats3000 , Thanks, but I would almost do anything to keep from talking to my doctor. He is another word for donkey.
