Re: Breaking News: Prince Philip

RIP Prince Philip.  I was touched by the support he offered to William and Harry after Diana's death.  He told them that he would walk behind her coffin if they would.

@Linmo Yes, however, I read at the time that there was some controversy regarding Philip walking behind the coffin as he didn't always treat Diana that well.  Don't think her brother Charles Spencer was happy about it.

Re: Breaking News: Prince Philip

What long and eventful life Prince Phillip had.

My heart goes out to the Queen since she lost her soul mate of over 70 years.

I was thinking last night, that as long as I have any memory the Queen and Prince Phillip have always been there.  The Queen's coronation took place before I was born, so as long as I have ever heard anything about the royals in England, it has always been them.  Along the same line, the Queen has now also lost the only other soul that knew her from the early days.

I am glad that he passed away at Windsor Castle and not in some hospital.  At least they were able to spend some time together in his last days.  And the Queen was able to be with him at the very end.

All that aside, he has family that is now mourning the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

@KKJ  Philip was very supportive of Diana when her marriage to Charles started really falling apart and he favored Diana over Camilla (as proven in letters he and Diana exchanged). She fell out of favor with him when she aired the dirty laundry to Andrew Mortin and Martin Bashir esp when she said she thought Charles would never be king.  I can't say I blame Philip!

Re: Breaking News: Prince Philip

I remember him fondly. It seems to me that as he grew older, he seemed like everyone's slightly eccentric uncle. As a young man, he was able to find a place for himself in the royal family, supporting his wife and doing a lot of charity work. And he was there for his grandsons when their mother died.

Does anyone else remember how he escorted Harry's wife (Meghan?) down the aisle when her father refused to come to her wedding? Such a kindness.

I think the world will remember him warmly.

That was Prince Charles, not Prince Phillip.

Buckingham Palace announces plans for Prince Philip's ceremonial funeral

NBC UNIVERSAL 1 hr ago

A ceremonial funeral for Britain's Prince Philip will take place next Saturday in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, a spokesman for Buckingham Palace said Saturday.

The royal family hoped the coming days would be seen as a chance to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh's "remarkable life," the spokesman said, adding that the Covid-19 pandemic "has of course required us to make significant adaptations to the original arrangements for His Royal Highness's funeral."

"While this is naturally a time of sadness and mourning for the royal family and the many others who knew or admired the Duke of Edinburgh, it is hoped that the coming days will also be seen as an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable life — remarkable both in terms of his vast contribution and lasting legacy," he added.

Philip's coffin will be transported from the castle to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped design and followed by Prince Charles and the senior royals on foot, the spokesman said.

A national minute's silence will be observed as the service starts at 3 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET), they added.

Queen Elizabeth II has approved Prime Minister Boris Johnson's recommendation of national mourning, which began April 9 and runs until and includes the day of the funeral, the spokesman said.

Only 30 people are expected to attend, including Philip's children, grandchildren and other close family members, they added.

Per the BBC Harry will attend, Meghan will not.

Healthwise, It would be wrong for Meghan to attend.   Can you imagine being very pregnant and enduring two twelve hour flights?  Yikes.  No doctor would tell a pregnant woman that's okay.

Beside that, I think it's good for Harry to attend solo.  It's about Grandpa, nothing else.
