Back in the day, which makes me sound like 90, we just went food shopping, prepared our meal and ate it. Now I go crazy looking up carbs, sugars, fats, & total calories. Is this organic or not & does that really matter? Grain fed or grass fed? If my daughter's visiting, I have to also check labels for gluten free.
It's exhausting especially bringing my magnifyiying glass in my bag to read all this on the packaging. Shopping takes 3 times as long & I dread it.
I'm not the only fact checker, so why is the population more obese than ever before? Type 2 diabetes more prevalent? Heart attack and stroke, high cholesterol & high blood pressure on the rise as well?
Could it be we were better off before we knew all this info? Maybe our bodies can't digest or adapt to all this extra fiber and grains I'm just hearing about.

To answer your questions, No we weren't better off. Processed foods and high sugar salt intake along with meat cheese promotes problems. Really is simple! More you shop outside perimeters of the store better it is for your health and waistline also pocket book.

I'm in the same camp as Violann, but alternatives abound! You can quickly make all kinds of breads and baked goods using almond meal, flax and coconut flour. Cloud bread is easy and delicious....I have no shortage! I love Paleo wraps....
Mary's Gone Crackers are wonderful and so is Crunch Master....
So many things taste great on lettuce wraps, Apple's or other fruit slices-sweet potatoes, jicama....
It's easy to go grain free these days BUT, many commercial alternatives pack a wallop in the carb and calorie departments. In the end, the ingredients used to make them are still fine flours and are easily converted into glucose. That may not be an issue if you are not diabetic or pre-diabetic or carb sensitive.

Once every week or two I indulge in a good old Jersey bagel with cream cheese. Other than that, bread is off the table for me. Must keep carbs to a minimum for health, weight loss and blood sugar control.

For sure @Poodlepet2, once you actually have to watch your intake of carbs, sugars, etc., the hunt for "good for you" food and imaginative alternatives takes over the shopping list. I've learned to shop the right side of the store (veggies), along the back, chicken, fish and meats, and then along the far left for yogurt, milk, cheese, etc. If I stay out of the middle aisles where all the pre-prepared and junk food live, I'm much off.

@queendiva. I carefully watch sugar/carbs, too. I can live w/o sweets, but take away my bread and pasta and I get mean. Once a week, I allow myself a semi-cheat day. Either 1/2 a whole wheat bagel (ever read the carbs for an entire one?), whole wheat pasta w/ sauce or popcorn at the movies. Once you begin denying yourself the foods you love forever, the diet is doomed.

I'm not a huge bread lover/eater. However, there are certain things I will eat that call for bread or a bun....bacon & eggs w/ toast, a hamburger, sloppy joes, etc. I normally buy some sort of whole wheat or whole grain loaf of bread and package of buns.
If I'm at a restaurant, I will order some kind of a wrap over a sandwich. If the restaurant offers bread with your entree, I don't eat it. At large family dinnrs, I never eat the rolls. I've just never been overly fond of bread.

Food with a label? Walk away. It's a processed item. Health is not 'processed'.
Why is the population more obese than ever before?
It's the "AND".
Salt....and.
Fat....and.
Sugar...and.
If one would eat these things in singular form, rarely would there be an issue.
It's not the sugar. I could sit down & eat 3T of pure table sugar & the body will process it for energy. No problems. But we don't eat sugar like that. We add the 'AND'. Sugar AND salt. Sugar AND fat...to make them palatable. All this is the same for salt. 'Salt is bad for HBP'. It's r-e-a-l-l-y not the salt but the 'AND'. Salt AND fat. Meat/egg products? Have to 'AND' salt & fat to make them edible. Cheese? High levels of salt & sugar to the fat to make them edible. Salt-fat-sugar is HIGHLY addictive. It takes a couple weeks to remove them from your diet, but once your palette is 'clean', just a sprinkle of salt/sugar is desired.
Fat is definitely is foundation of bad health. If one has health issues, even plant-based fats should be avoided. Fat clogs up our inside workings. Inflammation, insulin resistance, cholesterol issues....all stems from fat. I wish we could turn ourselves inside out...and really see what fat does to the body. Millions & millions of doctors & nutritionist/dietitians would immediately go out of business when seeing what that meat dish or 'healthy fat' product does to our blood stream. Ooof. Not good.

I often wonder if a $4 loaf of bread is really better for me than a $1 loaf!!!
