Re: Boy Scouts are dropping the word 'Boy'

I live in a rural farming area and Scouting is not popular here. 25 years ago when my son was in it, there was maybe 8 kids in the troop. The boys and girls at a very young age are more interested in farming related activities and once they get to highschool you would be hard pressed to get 8 teens together for Scouts.

Re: Boy Scouts are dropping the word 'Boy'

I don’t know how it is currently, but historically the problem has been that boys were only allowed to do certain activities and girls were only allowed to do certain activities, as if somehow your gender determines what you’re capable of doing. Not sure how much it has changed. Then there was a mess in the news with sexual orientation discrimination in the Boy Scouts. When I was a kid you couldn’t have paid me to join the Girl Scouts.

My husband was a boy scount and I was a girl scout.

I just wish boy scout didn't need to change their name...it shouldn't offend anyone Woman Sad

I'm in favor of any organization that teaches good citizenship and promotes taking care of the environment. My understanding is that girls who want to move up the ranks (like Eagle Scout) might want to be in the Boy Scouts, whereas the majority of Girl Scouts are well served by their current organization. Now, I may not have it entirely correct, but my basic point is they should do what helps them meet their goals.

Why not have 3 separate groups? Boys, Girls & Mixed. Sometimes same sex activities are good.

I'm all for keeping it the way it is.  Things are getting downright a**inine.

I second keeping it the way it is.  If the boy scouts are having issues with low enrollment, they should look into that.  Feels like they are taking the easy way out by targeting a new audience.  Then what happens when the girl scouts end up with low enrollment.

Sick.

Join Trail Life USA, at least these guys make sense.

Trail Life was formed in opposition to the Boy Scouts move to include gay people in their organization. They are Christian based and force their members to take a purity and faith vow.

I find nothing appealing in an organization that is based on exclusion of sexual orientation and religion other than christianity. In fact I find their very existence chilling.

Girl Scouts also have a system that leads to a Gold Star designation which is comparable to an Eagle Scout.

In this area, many times Boy Scout troops and Girls Scout troops will work together on certain projects.
