I appreciate the photos. I know the name of the bird, but I had never seen one outside of a book. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Blue Heron!

[ Edited ]

I have a blue heron wind spinner on my deck. It's large (almost 3-foot wing span) and very well made...heavy-duty backpack material. I got it from Premiere Kites. They make all kinds of quality bird wind spinners that are absolutely lovely.

@JFD12   Beautiful picture. We live on a lake in Florida and Blue Herons land on our dock (as well as our neighbors) almost everyday. They are huge and gorgeous birds.

My sister lives near the coast in LA and also had a creek on her lot. She sees them often and always sends me a photo. They are just beautiful to see! Maybe your visitor will return!

They are beautiful.  I saw them quite often when I lived on the west coast, and now see them regularly on the east coast

We have mostly white ones around here.  When they fly over they do look prehistoric.  Their legs sort of dangle when they fly.  They hold them up really weird.

Thanks, all, for the kind replies! 😊

@Lilysmom I never really thought about a net until recently, probably when we saw the blue heron! 🤓 I guess we've been lucky ... nothing has tried anything on the koi fish, and we have so many creatures around here. My hubby says he wants to buy a net though in the fall to prevent all the leaves and what-not from piling up in the pond. We have six koi fish out there, and we discovered 2 babies a few months ago when the fish woke up from "hibernation" and came back to life. 🥰 🐟 🐠

We shoo heron away and have decoys. They have eaten too many of our fish in pond. I am pretty attached to my fish.  We did build some grated covers, they are four screen doors that fit over the main part of pond. Our pond is about 2000 gallons with a waterfall. It's just not very attractive to have the screens on most of the time. But it keeps them safe. My favorite fish was taken last year.  When we are out back and epwatching we take covers off

We started out using old screen doors, then it just escalated.  If pond is smaller some window screens work. I found net was too much trouble taking on and off to clean and tend pond. And the heron just land on it and poke through to get fish if not put on right. At least that was our experience.
