We celebrate Christmas in my family.

We have a new member, born on Christmas day!

Any suggestions on how to celebrate both?

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

Two children and DIL have birthdays between Dec. 21 & January 2. We use birthday wrapping paper and treat each to favorite restaurant. This year, they said they'll do all three together. Much easier. But do what you can to make it special. Maybe celebrate birthday at a specific time on Christmas Day.

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

We have a family member born on the 24th and one born on the 26th.  They are adults now, but since we are the all together on the 25th, we celebrate both BD on that day with a cake and song and cards for both.

My mother often had her birthday fall on Mother's Day.  We always had a cake and brought her two gifts and cards...one for each occasion.

With a small child, it might be confusing.  When he is she is old enough to understand and be aware, maybe the birthday could be celebrated a day early to keep the occasions separate.  I think young children would appreciate a special day just for them...then sing Happy Birthday again with one small token gift on the 25th.

My sister was born on the 30th. She did not like it because she said she did not get much for her birthday since it's right after Christmas.

Dad liked it fell on the 30th since he could claim her as a deduction on his tax return for that full year. LOL!!!

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

We have December and January birthdays.  I feel it's very important to honor the birthday separately.  I maybe give a little more actually.

On "The New Adventures of Old Christine"  Matthew said his parents told him the Christmas tree was his birthday present.  I've never been a fan of combined gifts.

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

My grandfather's birthday was Christmas Eve, there was no problem or quandry.  Our extended family celebrated on Christmas Eve and there was always a Birthday cake and birthday presents for Grandpa.  You just make the timing work.  My grandmother and after she passed, my mother served the cake and we sang Happy Birthday after dinner and gave Grandpa his birthday presents.  After that, we went into the livingroom for the Christmas celebration.

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

DH birthday on 12 / 26.

He ALWAYS received just one combined presents, as in ‘here is your Christmas and your Birthday present.’

Plus his Mom said she couldn’t give him Birthday Parties with his friends when he was a child, as friends all had plans with their families.

I always make sure that his Birthday gift is a special one, and not wrapped in Christmas wrap.

We don’t have human children, but if we did I would try to overcome these issues, and NOT by moving his Birthday date.

Best wishes to the holiday / birthday people.

[ Edited ]

My first child was born on Christmas morning.  Another was born on New Year's Day at half time of the Cotton Bowl. I think that through the years we tried just about everything. Truth be known, nothing ever worked really well. The worst part was the gifts that said Hapy Birthday / Merry Christmas.  We even went to half year birthdays, celebrating in July.  All are grown now, so it's not so important anymore.  But the one whose birthday often falls on Mother's Day doesn't like it as an adult and a Mom.

@Nightowlz My birthday is on the 30th, too. I always felt like everyone had just gotten over Christmas and didn’t want to deal with a birthday. I envied my sister whose birthday was in June. What a nice time to have a birthday.

I had to smile because my dad always told me the same thing, that I was a good tax deduction. : )

Re: Birthday on Christmas Day

Our daughter was born on 12/24 and ever since then it has always been referred to as R's birthday - never Christmas Eve again.

We celebrate it on the day and she does get separate birthday gifts, wrapped in birthday paper and a birthday cake.

No one has ever said to her here's a combined gift.
