I have received enough candles, plaques, lotion and liquid hand soap to last me 2 life times as gifts for birthday and Christmas from friends.  I told friends to do following:

Since my birthday is in July (sign of Cancer) donate to St Jude. I donate twice a yr and know of 2 families that had personal dealings with them.  Instead of Christmas gift, donate to Hospice (my mom died in Dec).  Hospice was such a help to us.

One of my friends loved idea and asked I make a donation to Alzheimer's since her dad has it.  Her birthday is in March.  She will get back to me on Christmas donation choice.

I feel this is the best gift I can receive.  I asked they just donate and please do not tell me amount because I know it comes from their heart and is a gift of love.

@gramgrandkids1 Great idea....when gift giving become perfunctory, time to consider requesting replacing with your favorite charity (mine is Best Friends Animal Society).

@gramgrandkids1 , great idea.

Also, you can donate the personal care items to women's shelters as they are always in need.

I agree, many of us are at the stage of life where 'more' is not necessary.   LM

I think this an excellent idea and there are so many charities and causes to donate to in honor of anyone.

One Christmas I donated to a wildlife fund for my two great nieces.  They received pictures of the animals and were thrilled.

Thanks for a great post and wonderful kind suggestion!

We already do this for our grown sons and daughters who already have more money and stuff than they will ever use. I think everyone j own someone who has been touched by a wonderful organization that would truly appreciate the donation. We do ours in honor of our kids.
