Bonding: it's not only important for the mother, but for the father... and for both as a couple.

I agree. He will be absent enough as it is. Mom needs him there for a short while more than any team does.

Lotus, I saw your post after I wrote that... we're on the same page Smile

Sure, they could have hired a nurse, but that's an emotional time, you want your husband there with you.

If people didn't think it was important, it wouldn't be in their contracts. In fact, what businesses don't have it in their contracts? To me, it's not as much about bonding as it is being there during this special time in the couple's lives. Things can go wrong, too, no matter how safe they many have thought. C-Sections are usually for complications in the regular birth and the decisions are made right then and there. To suggest that a wife should opt for major surgery and a 6 week recovery to make it "convenient" for some player, is just unconscionable. After all, it's baseball, not brain surgery. But then, WHO has ever considered Boomer one of the great minds of the century?

Mr. Murphy spoke about the birth of his son. To my ears, he knows he made the right decision for his family. I have a feeling he'd feel the same even if he'd been docked for missing those games.

I should have added in my other post these facts. My favorite NHL hockey team had 2 players that missed games for the birth of their child and the organization figures that is part of their business. It doesn't need to be an "emergency birth" for a player to not go out of town to play and stay home with his wife and new baby.

And this team was/is still fighting for a spot in post season play, which for baseball fans means, a run at the most prized possession in Pro Hockey which is the Stanley Cup. Doesn't make any difference if this player is their top player or one on the 4th line. It is common practice in Pro Hockey to allow them to miss games to be with their wives, in town or out of town games.

I think when you enter the realm of baseball, and you are paid millions of dollars, you must realize that baseball is going to cut into family life. I am sure the wives are aware of this when they marry a professional player.

I think the player should be with his wife for the birth and the MLB allows this. But, once the baby is fine and the wife is fine, he should be back at work.

He is back at work. Whether he makes a dollar or one million dollars, three days is allowed in his contract to take off for the birth of his child.

Do you think the time they created their son, they were counting on their fingers the due date? Or should they only be intimate during the months of Feb- Sept, insuring the precious game of baseball should not be interrupted?

Boomer has apologized to both Daniel Murphy and his wife. He has also apologized for the early C-section remark. Apparently the March of Dimes reached out to him because he said that they told him babies that go full term are at much less risk for health problems.

And C-sections can be dangerous to mothers. There's always a risk with major surgery like that.

How can someone reach Boomer's age and not know that?
