It was reported she supported him while he went through medical school.  In the end, he had an affair, divorced her, got everything including the children leaving her with nothing. She snapped.

There were several tv movies and books made about her and her life.

I saw a Dateline type show about her and the murder of her husband.

She certainly became a troubled woman. She did not have the resources that her husband had. And he also made sure that he won every battle they had. And he reminded her of that fact.

You saw how she was really on her own and deteriorating. Certainly it is no excuse for what she did but you saw her decline.

The ex-husband bought her a beach front house in La Jolla, California and her alimony was 16,000 a month - back in the 80's.   She could have lived a very happy life.  

She had plenty of money and still wasn't happy.  She threw it away on hiring multiple attorneys and clothes/jewelry.

@San Antonio Gal I think she could not get over the fact that her husband had an affair with a much younger, prettier lady. In her eyes, money could never replace him. She believed she got him to where he was, a successful attorney. ( @qbetzforreal , it was law school not medical school)

Her murdered husband told her when they married that he did not want children.  He had to get through schools and any education to be able to support them.  She didn't listen and her ways drove him away.

Meredith made it seem very personal,  like it was her own story, fantastic acting. Scary to what lengths Betty went through instead of just letting go. I wonder if she went to her grave with a sense of satisfaction.

I'm watching the Netflix story right now which goes into  a lot more detail Dirty John: Betty. Murder is wrong but she really got done dirty. Easy to see why she lost her mind. He gaslit her big time with his affair he lied about. It was difficult to get lawyers to represent her because he was a big shot lawyer in San Diego. He had a thriving law practice and he divorced her first without a settlement of their assets and she  had to

First, her parents were a bit narcissitic and raised her to be subserviant to men and she married at 19.  She had to quit her job as a teacher when she became pregnant. they had their first baby while she helped put him thru medical school first and then  law school after he became an MD. He didnt practice medicine, he just decided on Law school and she supported the family doing menial jobs. by then with 2 babies and while he kept getting her pregnant because he didnt want them to use contraception for religious reasons. She lost the third (full-term) and then they had 2 more kids in California

I believe the Dirty John Betty series is based on the book  Until The Twelfth of Never, based on the complex dynamics of the case.

@cjm61 - He received a medical degree from Cornell and then decided to pursue a law degree at Harvard Law School.

His speciality was malpratice litigation.

I suspect when he divorced her, she felt her life was over and had nothing more to lose. What he did was the ultimate betrayal and he deserved her revenge.

It was a complicated issue.  Of course murder is never the answer.

   This situation brought up how the first wife did all the hard work in the lean years and the younger wife reaps all the benefits. It brought up how do you fight the system when your ex is the system. It brought up how she got a lot of money most ex wives will never see bit she didn't get the family she made. It brought up how she had a lot of money but her revenge was more important than building a new life in relative luxury.  I need to retire the phrase " it brought up" My bad.
