@JBKOwrote:DearPrudence you are on to something. There are what? 17-20 types of birth control. And some of them are virtually free. You just need proper education on them (i.e Fertility Awareness Method).
@JBKO, I hardly know where to begin. There is often no education for impoverished young women in many countries or, if so, not so much about sex.
Women are still a distant second in terms of power over their own bodies and importance compared to men in many countries.
Birth control is not necessarily readily available. Heck, any kind of reproductive health services are often frowned upon. Funds are hard to come by when it comes to women's needs in this area.
Then there are the political/religious barriers that are often insurmountable.
Yes, women in third-world countries are suffering because of all the above; women everywhere are suffering as well to some degree.
Please don't put the onus on women. It belongs elsewhere.

Add to that, the war torn countries, civil wars, etc., where just staying alive and not being kidnapped by enemy invaders who capture and rape young women make it a bit difficult for them to wander down to their local clinics or drug stores for free birth control or to take classes about it. Checked reality at the door folks?

I have to disagree. Maybe the onus shouldn't be put entirely on women, but a good amount of it should be. If you really don't want to become pregnant, you should take it upon yourself to find the resources. Like my friend says, no one owes you anything in life. Be aware of your surroundings and notice patterns in life. Mariah Carey, even if she has become a diva and even sort of a nutcase knew not to follow her sister's footsteps and become a teen mom.
@JBKO, well, excuse me, then. I thought we were talking about third-world countries, not women like your friend or Mariah Carey.
